Surah 'Abasa — Verse 35

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse continues the vivid description of the Day of Judgment, where the Qur'an depicts the extreme terror and chaos that will overwhelm every soul. After mentioning that a person will flee from his brother, the verse adds that he will also flee from his mother and his father. This is a powerful illustration of the sheer magnitude of that Day's horror — the very bonds of blood and kinship, which are among the strongest ties in this worldly life, will be severed by fear and self-preservation. A person will run away from the ones who gave him life, nurtured him, and loved him most, not out of hatred or ingratitude, but because each soul will be consumed by its own terror and concern for its fate. The Qur'an emphasizes this to awaken hearts to the reality of that Day, when no relationship, no status, and no worldly attachment can offer any protection or comfort.

Reflection and Call:

This verse is a profound reminder of the fleeting nature of this world and the absolute reality of the Hereafter. The One who created you, gave you parents who cared for you, and blessed you with family and loved ones — He alone deserves your utmost devotion and preparation for that inevitable meeting. Do not let the love of this world and its attachments distract you from the purpose of your existence: to worship your Lord and to prepare for the Day when no one can help you except your deeds. Let this verse stir your heart to return to Allah sincerely, to mend your relationship with Him, and to strive in good deeds that will be your companions on that terrifying Day. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us that on that Day, Allah will shelter the believer under His shade — so seek that shade now through faith, prayer, charity, and righteousness. Run to Allah today, before the Day comes when you will run away from even your closest kin.
