Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "بَلِ" (Bal): Rather/nay — a particle of transition indicating a shift from a previous statement to a more significant one.
- "الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا" (alladhīna kafarū): Those who disbelieve — those who reject faith and cover the truth with their denial.
- "يُكَذِّبُونَ" (yukadhdhibūn): They deny/believe it to be false — they persist in rejecting the truth despite its clarity.
Tafsir (Explanation):
After Allah, the Most High, has laid out the undeniable signs of His power and the certainty of the Day of Judgment — the splitting of the sky, the stretching of the earth, and the meeting with one’s Lord — the question arises: what could possibly prevent these people from believing? The answer is not a lack of evidence, but a stubbornness rooted in their very nature.
The verse states: "Rather, those who disbelieve persist in denial." This is a profound declaration of the spiritual condition of the disbelievers. It is not that the truth is hidden from them or that they lack the intellect to grasp it — rather, their denial is a deliberate choice, a willful rejection of what their hearts already know to be true. They hear the Qur'an, they see the signs of creation, yet they turn away and label it all as falsehood.
This denial is not born of ignorance but of arrogance and attachment to this worldly life. They fear that accepting the truth would require them to change their ways, to submit to a higher authority, and to be accountable for their actions. So they bury their heads in the sand, convincing themselves that the resurrection and the reckoning will never come.
Yet, Allah knows what they conceal in their hearts — the inner conviction that the message is true, even as their tongues deny it. This inner conflict is a torment in itself, but the greater torment awaits them in the Hereafter.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this verse. The Qur'an is not a book of tales — it is a living truth that addresses your heart directly. The same sun that rises and sets, the same sky that stretches above you, the same breath that fills your lungs — all of these are constant reminders of the Creator who will bring you back to Him. Do not let pride or worldly attachments blind you to what your soul already knows. The door of repentance is open, and the mercy of Allah is vast. Embrace the truth before the truth embraces you on a Day when no denial will avail.
