Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Batash (بَطْش): Seizure, striking with force, or taking hold of someone with overwhelming power and severity. It implies a sudden, mighty grip that leaves no room for escape.
- Shadeed (شَدِيد): Severe, intense, or extremely powerful.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse delivers a profound and reassuring message to the believer: "Indeed, the seizure of your Lord is severe." It means that when Allah—may He be exalted—decides to punish the wrongdoers and tyrants, His grip is mighty and His punishment is overwhelming. Even if He grants them respite and allows them to persist in their oppression for a time, His eventual retribution is certain, and its intensity is beyond human imagination. The verse emphasizes that Allah’s power is absolute; no force can resist His wrath, and no oppressor can escape His justice.
This comes as a direct comfort to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the believers who were witnessing the persecution of the faithful by the tyrants of their time. It reassures them that the apparent triumph of evil is temporary, and that the final word belongs to Allah, whose punishment for the unjust is both inevitable and severe. The verse also serves as a warning to all who transgress: do not be deceived by delays in punishment, for Allah’s timing is perfect, and His strike is decisive.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder the greatness of this verse. It is a source of immense hope for the oppressed and a stern admonition for the oppressor. If you are facing hardship or witnessing injustice, know that your Lord sees all, and His justice is never delayed without wisdom. He is the Most Merciful, but He is also the Most Severe in punishment when His limits are transgressed. Let this inspire you to remain steadfast in faith, to trust in Allah’s plan, and to never despair of His help. And if you find yourself tempted to wrong others, remember that the grip of your Lord is severe—so choose the path of righteousness, for it leads to His pleasure and eternal success. Turn to Him in repentance, for He is also the Forgiving, the Loving, who welcomes back those who seek His mercy.
