Word Meanings:

  • Yubdi' (يُبْدِئُ): He originates creation, bringing it into existence from nothing for the first time.
  • Yu'id (يُعِيدُ): He repeats or brings back creation, i.e., resurrecting it after death.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse comes as a powerful confirmation of Allah's absolute power and sovereignty. Allah states clearly: "Indeed, it is He who originates [creation] and repeats it."

This means that Allah alone is the One who initiates the creation of all beings from nothing—without any prior example or model—and He alone has the power to bring them back to life after their death for the Day of Judgment. The repetition of creation (the resurrection) is just as easy for Him as the first creation; in fact, it is even easier, as the Qur'an states elsewhere: "And He it is Who begins creation, then He repeats it, and that is easier for Him" (Ar-Rum: 27).

This verse is a direct response to those who deny the resurrection, reminding them that the One who created the heavens and the earth, and every living being from nothing, is certainly capable of recreating them. It also carries a profound warning to the disbelievers who persecuted the believers (as mentioned earlier in the surah regarding the People of the Ditch): the same Allah who created them once will bring them back to hold them accountable for their deeds, and His punishment is severe and just.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse fills the believer's heart with awe and hope. It reminds us that our lives are not a random accident—we were deliberately created by a Wise and Powerful Lord, and we will be returned to Him. This should motivate us to live with purpose, knowing that our deeds are seen and recorded. At the same time, it is a call to those who are far from Allah: the door of return is open, for the One who originated you from nothing can also forgive you and give you a fresh start. Do not despair of His mercy, and do not think that death is the end—there is a meeting with your Lord, and His justice and mercy will prevail. Let this truth draw you closer to Him, for He is the One who begins and repeats, and He is the Most Merciful to those who turn to Him.
