Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues the description of the human being’s flawed reasoning when faced with the tests of life. After mentioning in the previous verse that when Allah grants wealth and comfort, a person proudly says, “My Lord has honored me,” this verse addresses the opposite situation: when Allah tests a person by restricting his provision and making his livelihood tight, the person falls into the opposite extreme of despair and misjudgment. He assumes that this hardship means Allah holds him in low regard or has abandoned him, and so he cries out, “My Lord has humiliated me!”
The verse exposes a deep misunderstanding of how Allah deals with His creation. Provision and deprivation are not measures of Allah’s love or disdain. Wealth is not necessarily a sign of honor, nor is poverty a sign of humiliation. Allah gives and withholds according to His infinite wisdom, which often lies beyond human perception. Sometimes, wealth is a test of gratitude and responsibility, while poverty can be a test of patience, trust, and reliance on Allah. The true measure of honor and humiliation lies in one’s faith, character, and obedience to Allah—not in the size of one’s bank account or the abundance of worldly goods.
This verse gently corrects the human tendency to judge Allah’s favor through material lenses. It calls upon the believer to rise above this shallow perspective and to recognize that every condition—whether ease or hardship—is a divine test designed to purify the soul and elevate one’s rank. The believer who understands this remains steadfast and content in both states, knowing that Allah’s wisdom is perfect and His mercy is ever-present, even when the path seems difficult.
