Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Kallā (كَلَّا): A strong Arabic particle of rebuke and denial, meaning "No indeed!" or "Absolutely not!" It is used to reject and correct a false notion.
  • Bal (بَلْ): "Rather" or "Nay" — used to shift attention to something more significant and severe.
  • Lā tukrimūn (لَا تُكْرِمُونَ): "You do not honour" — the verb indicates a continuous, habitual action of neglecting.
  • Al-Yatīm (الْيَتِيمَ): The orphan — a child who has lost his father before reaching puberty, and is thus in need of care, protection, and financial support.

The Tafsir (Exegesis):

Allah, the Most High, begins this verse with a firm and decisive rebuke: "Kallā!" — No indeed! This is a direct rejection of the false assumption that wealth and poverty are signs of Allah's love or disdain for a person. Some people mistakenly believe that if someone is given abundant provision, it means Allah is pleased with him, and if someone is deprived, it means Allah has humiliated him. Allah corrects this misconception entirely.

Then Allah says: "Bal lā tukrimūna al-yatīm" — Rather, your actions are even worse than your false claims. The real problem is not whether you are rich or poor; the real problem is that you do not honour the orphan. Despite the wealth and blessings Allah has given you, you neglect the most vulnerable among you — the child who has lost his father and has no one to protect him. You do not treat him with kindness, nor do you spend on him from what Allah has granted you. You do not feed him, clothe him, or stand by his side.

This verse is a profound call to self-accountability. It teaches us that true honour in the sight of Allah is not measured by how much wealth we accumulate, but by how we treat those who are in need. The orphan is a trust from Allah upon the wealthy and the capable. When we neglect him, we are not merely failing a social duty — we are failing a divine test.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) gave us a beautiful promise in this regard: "I and the one who cares for an orphan will be together in Paradise like this" — and he held his index and middle fingers together. What an immense honour awaits those who open their hearts and their hands to the orphan!

So, dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart. Ask yourself: Is there an orphan in your family, your neighbourhood, or your community whom you can support? A smile, a kind word, a meal, or financial help — all of these are acts of worship that draw you closer to Allah and elevate your rank in the Hereafter. Do not let wealth deceive you, and do not let neglect define you. Honour the orphan, and Allah will honour you in ways you cannot imagine.
