Surah Al-Balad — Verse 8

These two eyes, which we often take for granted, are a magnificent creation that allow us to perceive the world around us – to see the beauty of the heavens, the earth, the faces of our loved ones, and the signs of Allah scattered throughout creation.

This reminder comes in the context of a broader discourse about the human being who boasts of his wealth and power, thinking himself self-sufficient. Allah responds by listing His countless favors: the eyes that see, the tongue and lips that speak, and the guidance to the two paths – the path of good and the path of evil. The mention of the eyes specifically highlights how Allah has equipped every human being with the tools necessary to observe, reflect, and ultimately choose the right path.

The rhetorical style of the verse – posing a question that expects an affirmative answer – is a powerful teaching method. The eyes are also a trust (amanah) from Allah. They will bear witness on the Day of Judgment regarding what they have seen. So guard your gaze, use your eyes to seek knowledge, to read the Book of Allah, and to contemplate His creation. In doing so, you transform this physical blessing into a spiritual one that draws you closer to your Creator.

This verse, in its beautiful brevity, teaches us that Allah's care for us is complete. He did not create us and leave us neglected; rather, He gave us the very instruments we need to navigate this life and find our way to Him. So let us thank Him with our eyes, our tongues, and our hearts – and let our gratitude manifest in righteous action.
