Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • كَذَّبَ (kadhdhaba): Denied, rejected, or belied the truth.
  • تَوَلَّىٰ (tawallā): Turned away, withdrew, or fled from the call of truth.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse continues the powerful rhetorical questioning directed at the one who forbids the servant of Allah from praying — a reference to Abu Jahl, the arrogant leader of Quraysh who opposed the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) with hostility and pride. Allah poses a striking question to make the matter crystal clear: "Have you considered, O Prophet, if this man who forbids prayer denies the truth and turns away from it?"

The verse exposes the utter contradiction and moral bankruptcy of such a person. He not only rejects the message of truth himself but also actively prevents others from reaching it. He combines two grave sins: disbelief in his own heart and aggression against those who believe. The question is meant to awaken the conscience — if such a person denies the truth and turns his back on guidance, does he not realize that Allah sees everything he does? Does he not fear the consequences of his arrogance?

This verse serves as a profound reminder that no one can escape the watchful eye of Allah. The one who denies and turns away may think he is safe, may believe his power and status protect him, but Allah sees all. Nothing is hidden from Him — not the denial in the heart, not the turning away in action, and not the harm inflicted upon the believers.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, ponder deeply upon this verse. How many people today, like Abu Jahl, reject the truth not out of ignorance but out of arrogance and pride? How many turn away from the call of Islam because it conflicts with their desires, their status, or their interests? Yet Allah sees all, and His knowledge encompasses every deed, every intention, and every word.

The beauty of this verse lies in its reassurance to the believer. When you face opposition, when people mock your faith, when they try to prevent you from praying and worshipping Allah — remember that Allah sees everything. Your duty is to remain steadfast, to continue your prayer, and to draw closer to your Lord. The one who opposes you, who denies and turns away, will face his Lord and find that nothing he did was hidden.

Let this verse strengthen your resolve. Do not let the arrogance of the deniers discourage you. Their denial and turning away are their own destruction, while your patience and perseverance are your path to success. Allah is with those who believe, and He sees every act of worship, every tear shed in humility, and every step taken in His cause. So prostrate to your Lord, draw near to Him, and trust that He will deal with those who deny and turn away — for He is the All-Seeing, the All-Knowing, and His justice is perfect.
