Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Hamd (الْحَمْدُ): Complete and perfect praise; gratitude and commendation directed to someone for their virtues, goodness, and favors. It includes both praise for attributes and thankfulness for blessings.
- Lillah (لِلَّهِ): Belongs exclusively to Allah alone, to the exclusion of all others.
- Rabb (رَبِّ): The Lord, Master, and Owner who creates, sustains, and manages all affairs; the One who nurtures and cares for His creation with perfect wisdom and mercy.
- Al-'Alamin (الْعَالَمِينَ): All of creation — every being and thing that exists besides Allah. This includes humans, angels, jinn, animals, plants, and the entire universe in all its realms.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse teaches us that all perfect praise and gratitude belong to Allah alone — no one else deserves it. He is the source of every blessing we see or cannot see, whether spiritual or worldly, apparent or hidden. When we say "Alhamdulillah," we are declaring that Allah is worthy of all praise because His attributes are all attributes of perfection, and His actions are all filled with wisdom and mercy.
Allah is described here as Rabb al-'Alamin — the Lord of all worlds. This means He is the Creator of everything that exists, the Sustainer who provides for all His creatures, and the Manager who governs the affairs of the entire universe. He nurtures all of creation with His blessings, and He specially nurtures His righteous servants by guiding them to faith and good deeds. Every creature, from the smallest ant to the largest galaxy, is under His care and control.
The verse also carries a gentle command: since Allah alone is deserving of praise, we are encouraged to praise Him constantly. When we begin our day, when we eat, when we succeed, and even when we face trials, saying "Alhamdulillah" connects our hearts to our Creator and reminds us that everything comes from Him.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, imagine a universe where every single creature — the birds in the sky, the fish in the sea, the trees swaying in the wind — is being sustained and cared for by one Merciful Lord. You are part of this magnificent creation, and your Lord knows you, provides for you, and loves you. When you say "Alhamdulillah," you join the entire creation in praising its Creator. This simple phrase is a key to contentment: it transforms your heart from focusing on what you lack to appreciating what you have. It fills your soul with peace, knowing that the One who manages the entire universe is also managing your affairs with perfect wisdom. So let "Alhamdulillah" be your constant companion — it is a phrase that opens the doors of gratitude, increases your blessings, and brings you closer to the Most Merciful. Indeed, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us that praising Allah is the best of supplications, and it fills the scales of good deeds on the Day of Judgment. Embrace this beautiful expression, and let it illuminate your heart and your life.
