Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Ar-Rahman (الرَّحْمَنِ): The Most Merciful, whose mercy encompasses all of creation—believers and non-believers alike, in this world and the next.
- Ar-Raheem (الرَّحِيمِ): The Especially Merciful, whose mercy is specifically and eternally bestowed upon the believers.
Tafsir (Explanation):
After praising Allah in the previous verse with His attribute of Lordship and absolute sovereignty, this verse continues the praise by highlighting two of His most beautiful names: Ar-Rahman and Ar-Raheem. These names describe the boundless mercy of Allah, which is His defining attribute. Ar-Rahman indicates that His mercy is vast and all-encompassing—it reaches every creature, every soul, every atom of existence, without exception. No one is deprived of this mercy in this worldly life: the sun shines on the righteous and the wicked alike, rain falls on the fertile land and the barren desert, and provision is given to the believer and the disbeliever. This universal mercy is a sign of His infinite generosity and care for all that He has created.
Ar-Raheem, on the other hand, refers to His special, everlasting mercy that is reserved for the believers—those who submit to Him, follow His guidance, and strive in His path. This is the mercy that will be manifested in the Hereafter, when the believers are admitted into Paradise, forgiven their sins, and granted the vision of their Lord. It is a mercy that transforms hearts, elevates souls, and grants eternal bliss.
Together, these two names teach us a profound lesson: Allah’s mercy is not a distant concept but a living reality that surrounds us every moment. When you recite this verse, let it fill your heart with hope and gratitude. Know that no matter how great your sins may be, Allah’s mercy is greater. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) told us that Allah’s mercy overcomes His wrath, and that He has divided His mercy into one hundred parts—keeping ninety-nine parts for the Day of Judgment and sending down just one part to earth, through which all creatures show compassion to one another. Imagine, then, the vastness of His mercy that awaits you if you turn to Him sincerely!
This verse also calls you to embody mercy in your own life. Just as Allah is merciful to all His creation, He loves those who are merciful to others. Show kindness to your family, your neighbors, the poor, the orphans, and even the animals around you. By doing so, you draw closer to the attributes of your Lord and become deserving of His special mercy—the mercy of Ar-Raheem—on the Day when nothing else will avail you.
Let this beautiful verse be a source of comfort and motivation: your Lord is not a stern, distant judge, but a Merciful, Loving Creator who opens His doors of forgiveness and compassion to all who call upon Him. So call upon Him with these names, and ask Him to shower you with both His universal mercy and His special mercy, for He is indeed Ar-Rahman and Ar-Raheem.
