Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "Sāhir" (ساحر): A magician or sorcerer, one who practices magic.
- "Alīm" (عليم): Skilled, expert, or deeply knowledgeable in a particular craft—here, highly proficient in the art of magic.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah narrates to us the arrogant and defiant response of Pharaoh when the truth of Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) was made manifest through clear miracles. Instead of submitting to the undeniable signs of Allah, Pharaoh—blinded by pride and his love for power—turned to his own worldly means to counter the divine truth. He commanded his people: "Bring me every skilled magician," meaning every sorcerer who had perfected his craft and was renowned for his expertise in the art of illusion.
Pharaoh’s intention was to gather the most accomplished magicians of his kingdom to confront Moses (peace be upon him) in a public contest, hoping to overwhelm the truth with falsehood and to deceive the masses into believing that Moses was merely a magician like the others. He sought to protect his throne and his false divinity by any means, even if it meant assembling the greatest deceivers of his time.
This verse highlights a profound reality: the people of falsehood, when confronted with truth, often resort to their own resources—wealth, power, and deception—to extinguish the light of Allah. Yet, as the subsequent verses show, Allah’s truth prevails, and the schemes of the disbelievers are doomed to fail.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, ponder how Pharaoh gathered every skilled magician, sparing no effort or expense, to fight a single truth brought by a single man—Moses, who relied not on his own strength but on the power of his Lord. This teaches us that when we stand for truth and place our trust in Allah, no force on earth—no matter how great or well-equipped—can overcome us. The Qur’an repeatedly assures us that Allah is with those who believe and that He will make their stand firm.
Let this verse inspire you to hold fast to your faith, to trust in Allah’s promise of victory for the believers, and to never be intimidated by the apparent strength of falsehood. For the end is always for the righteous, and the might of Allah is above all might. Embrace the Qur’an as your guide, and you will find in it the light that no darkness—however skilled—can extinguish.
