Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- لِتَلْفِتَنَا: to turn us away, to divert us, to make us abandon something.
- الْكِبْرِيَاءُ: greatness, supremacy, dominion, or authority.
- بِمُؤْمِنِينَ: believers, those who accept and affirm the truth of something.
Tafsir (Explanation):
When Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) and his brother Harun (Aaron, peace be upon him) stood before Pharaoh and his chiefs, delivering the message of Tawhid (the Oneness of Allah) and calling them to worship Allah alone, the response was not one of reflection or open-minded inquiry. Instead, Pharaoh and his assembly confronted Musa with a mixture of accusation and arrogance. They said: "Have you come to us to turn us away from what we found our forefathers practicing?" — meaning, to pull them from the religion of their ancestors, which was the worship of idols and false gods. They viewed this call as an attack on their heritage and traditions, not as an invitation to truth.
They then added: "And so that the two of you may have greatness in the land?" — referring to the dominion and authority in the land of Egypt. They accused Musa and Harun of seeking worldly power and kingship for themselves, rather than sincerely calling to Allah. This was a baseless accusation, for the prophets of Allah never sought personal gain or rulership; their only desire was the guidance and salvation of their people.
Finally, they declared with absolute certainty and stubbornness: "And we will not believe in you." This was a definitive rejection, made before even considering the signs and miracles that Musa had brought. They closed the door to faith, not because of lack of evidence, but because of pride, attachment to their ancestral ways, and fear of losing their status and influence.
This verse carries profound lessons for every believer. It shows how blind following of ancestors and attachment to worldly power can become barriers to accepting the truth. The people of Pharaoh were not ignorant of the miracles; they witnessed the staff turning into a serpent and other clear signs. Yet, their hearts were sealed by arrogance and the desire to preserve their social standing.
Dear reader, reflect on this: How often do we reject truth simply because it challenges our habits, our inherited traditions, or our comfort zones? The Quran calls us to open our hearts, to think critically, and to prioritize the truth over blind conformity. Allah, in His infinite mercy, sent prophets to every nation to guide them out of darkness into light. The response of Pharaoh's people is a warning — do not let pride or attachment to the ways of your forefathers prevent you from embracing the beautiful message of Islam, which is the completion of all previous divine messages.
The call of Musa and Harun was not for personal glory, but for the salvation of souls. Likewise, the message of Islam today is not for the benefit of any individual or nation, but for the happiness of humanity in this life and the Hereafter. Open your heart to it, and you will find peace, purpose, and a direct connection with your Creator.
