Word Meanings:

  • "Fāra al-tannūr" (وفار التنور): The oven overflowed with water. This was the divinely appointed sign for Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him) that the punishment was about to begin.
  • "Zawjayn ithnayn" (زوجين اثنين): Two pairs — meaning a male and a female from every species of animal.
  • "Ahlak" (أهلك): Your family members.
  • "Man sabaqa 'alayhi al-qawl" (من سبق عليه القول): Those upon whom the decree of destruction had already been passed due to their persistent disbelief.

Explanation of the Verse:

When Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him) had completed the ark as Allah commanded him, the promised moment of divine punishment arrived. The sign came when water burst forth violently from the oven — the very place where bread was baked — signaling that the flood was imminent. At that moment, Allah addressed Nuh with a clear command: "Carry into the ark two pairs of every kind of animal — a male and a female — so that life on earth may continue after the flood. Also carry your family members, except those against whom the word of destruction has already been decreed, such as your son and your wife who rejected faith. And carry with you those who believed in your message."

Yet, despite Nuh's long years of patient calling — nine hundred and fifty years of inviting his people to the truth — only a small number had believed in him. The Quran tells us: "And none believed with him except a few." This small group of believers was the seed of a new humanity, purified by the trial of the flood and steadfast in their devotion to Allah.

A Call to Reflection:

This verse carries profound lessons for every believer. It shows us that Allah's promise is always fulfilled — whether it is the promise of victory for the righteous or punishment for the wrongdoers. The sign of the oven overflowing was a clear proof that Allah's command is absolute and that His timing is perfect. It also teaches us that the number of believers is not what matters; what matters is their sincerity and firmness. A small group of true believers, standing with their Prophet, was enough to carry the banner of faith into a new era of human history. So never be disheartened by the small number of those who follow the truth around you — for Allah's help comes to those who are patient and steadfast, just as it came to Nuh and his faithful companions. And remember that family ties do not guarantee salvation; what saves a person is their faith and righteous deeds. Let us strive to be among those who truly believe and act upon Allah's guidance, so that we may be included in His mercy and protection, both in this world and the Hereafter.

📜 Verse 38-42 — Hud

And he constructed the ship, and whenever an assembly of the eminent of his people passed by him, they ridiculed him. He said, "If you ridicule us, then we will ridicule you just as you ridicule.
And you are going to know who will get a punishment that will disgrace him [on earth] and upon whom will descend an enduring punishment [in the Hereafter]."
[So it was], until when Our command came and the oven overflowed, We said, "Load upon the ship of each [creature] two mates and your family, except those about whom the word has preceded, and [include] whoever has believed." But none had believed with him, except a few.
And [Noah] said, "Embark therein; in the name of Allah is its course and its anchorage. Indeed, my Lord is Forgiving and Merciful."
And it sailed with them through waves like mountains, and Noah called to his son who was apart [from them], "O my son, come aboard with us and be not with the disbelievers."
