Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Ar-Rawʿ (الرَّوْعُ): The intense fear or terror that had gripped Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) when his guests refused to eat the food he had offered them.
- Al-Bushrā (الْبُشْرَىٰ): The glad tidings — specifically, the news that he would be blessed with a son, Ishaq (Isaac), and after him, Yaʿqub (Jacob), peace be upon them.
- Yujādilunā (يُجَادِلُنَا): He began to argue or plead with Our messengers — meaning, he was debating with the angels sent by Allah, not arguing with Allah Himself, for no prophet would ever dispute with his Lord.
Explanation of the Verse:
When the moment of fear had passed from Ibrahim (peace be upon him) — that fear which had seized him upon seeing his angelic guests decline his generous hospitality — and when the joyful news had reached him that he would be granted a righteous son, Ishaq, and then a grandson, Yaʿqub, he immediately turned his heart toward a matter of deep concern. He began to plead with Allah’s messengers, the angels, regarding the people of Prophet Lut (Lot), peace be upon him.
His argument was not one of defiance or rejection of Allah’s decree — far from it. Rather, it was the plea of a compassionate and merciful soul. Ibrahim knew that the angels had been sent to destroy the wicked towns of Sodom and Gomorrah, yet his noble heart yearned to see if the punishment could be delayed, or if mercy could be extended. He was especially concerned for his nephew Lut, who was a righteous believer living among those corrupt people. Ibrahim hoped that perhaps the believers among them — Lut and his family — might be spared, and that the punishment might be postponed to give the sinners more time to repent.
This beautiful scene reveals the profound character of Ibrahim: even after receiving the greatest personal glad tidings, his thoughts were not consumed by his own joy. Instead, he turned to intercede for others. It demonstrates the depth of his mercy, his love for Allah’s creation, and his hope that even the most sinful people might find a path to salvation.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, look at the character of this great prophet. When good news came to him, he did not become self-absorbed. He immediately thought of others — even of those who had gone astray. This is the spirit of true faith: a heart that cares, that hopes for the guidance of others, and that never loses faith in Allah’s mercy.
And see how Allah, in His infinite wisdom, responds to this noble plea — not with rejection, but with a gentle reminder that His knowledge is complete, and His justice is perfect. The angels tell Ibrahim, in the following verses, that the matter is already decreed, and that Lut and his family will be saved, except his wife who chose to remain with the wrongdoers.
This teaches us that while we should always hope for mercy and pray for the guidance of others, we must also trust that Allah’s plan is perfect. He knows what is best, and His wisdom surpasses all understanding. Let us, like Ibrahim, be people of compassion — but let us also be people of complete submission to Allah’s will, knowing that whatever He decrees is for the ultimate good of His servants.
