- Al-Mikyal (الْمِكْيَال): The measuring container used for measuring goods, especially grains and liquids.
- Al-Mizan (الْمِيزَان): The scale or balance used for weighing items.
- Yawm Muhit (يَوْمٍ مُحِيط): A Day that encompasses and surrounds everything—referring to the Day of Judgment, from which there is no escape.
Tafsir (Explanation):
And We sent to the people of Madyan their brother Shu'ayb (peace be upon him)—a man from among them, known for his honesty and wisdom. He called them to the pure message of Tawhid (monotheism), saying: "O my people, worship Allah alone. You have no god worthy of worship besides Him. So devote your worship entirely to Him and abandon all false deities."
But Shu'ayb did not stop at calling them to correct their creed; he also addressed their corrupt financial practices. He said: "And do not diminish the measure and the scale." This means: do not cheat people by giving them less than their due when you measure or weigh goods for them. Do not take from people's rights, whether in small amounts or large. This is a profound reminder that Islam cares for both the spiritual and the material well-being of society—true faith must be reflected in honest dealings with others.
Then Shu'ayb gave them a gentle yet firm warning: "Indeed, I see you in prosperity and abundance." He reminded them that Allah had blessed them with wealth, fertile land, and a life of ease—so why would they resort to cheating and fraud? They had no need for such dishonesty, for Allah had already given them plenty. This is a beautiful call to gratitude: when Allah blesses you, the appropriate response is to obey Him, not to transgress His limits.
He then concluded: "And indeed, I fear for you the punishment of an Encompassing Day." This is the Day of Judgment—a Day that will surround every soul, leaving no corner for escape and no place for hiding. On that Day, every deed—whether a grain of good or a grain of evil—will be brought forth. The cheater will be confronted with his cheating, and the honest will be rewarded for his honesty.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, see how the message of the prophets is comprehensive—it combines the worship of Allah with justice in daily transactions. Islam is not merely rituals; it is a complete way of life. When you are honest in your business, when you give full measure and full weight, you are not just being ethical—you are worshipping Allah. And when you cheat, you are not just harming people—you are inviting the displeasure of the One who sees all.
Let us learn from Shu'ayb's gentle approach: he reminded his people of their blessings before warning them of punishment. He appealed to their sense of gratitude and their fear of Allah's encompassing justice. This is the balance of da'wah—hope and fear, mercy and warning.
So, dear Muslim, be honest in all your dealings. Know that Allah is watching, and that every scale on earth is but a shadow of the perfect justice that will be established on the Day when no soul will be wronged in the least. And to those who have not yet embraced Islam, know that this religion calls you to the highest standards of character and the purest form of worship—a life of peace with your Creator and justice with His creation.
