- Qamees (قميص): The shirt or garment worn by Yusuf (Joseph), peace be upon him.
- Kadhib (كذب): False, fabricated, or lying — here referring to blood that was not genuinely Yusuf's.
- Sawwalat (سوّلت): Beautified, embellished, or made something appear appealing — referring to the soul's inclination toward evil.
- Sabrun Jameel (صبر جميل): Beautiful patience — patience without complaint, without agitation, and without despair toward creation.
- Al-Musta'an (المستعان): The One from whom help and assistance are sought.
Explanation of the Verse:
The brothers of Yusuf, having cast him into the well, devised a plan to conceal their crime from their father Ya'qub (Jacob), peace be upon him. They came to their father in the evening, weeping and carrying Yusuf's shirt stained with blood — but it was not his blood. It was the blood of a goat or another animal, which they had smeared on the garment to fabricate evidence that a wolf had devoured him. Yet their scheme was flawed, for the shirt was not torn, and a wolf's attack would surely have left the garment shredded. This very detail exposed their lie to the discerning eye of their father.
Ya'qub, peace be upon him, a prophet endowed with wisdom and insight, did not accept their claim. He said: "Rather, your souls have embellished for you a matter" — meaning your inner selves, inclined toward evil, made this terrible act appear acceptable and even necessary in your eyes, and you carried it out. He did not accuse them directly of murder, but he made clear that he knew they were not telling the truth.
Then he declared: "So beautiful patience" — meaning: my affair is to observe patience that is beautiful, patience free from complaint to any creature, patience that seeks only the reward of Allah. He did not wail, nor did he tear his clothes in despair, nor did he lose faith in Allah's decree. Rather, he entrusted his grief to his Lord alone.
And he concluded: "And Allah is the One whose help is sought against what you describe" — meaning: I seek Allah's assistance, not my own strength or cunning, to bear the burden of what you claim and to endure this trial. He turned to Allah in complete reliance, knowing that Allah alone could grant him steadfastness and reunite him with his beloved son.
Reflection and Da'wah:
This verse carries profound lessons for every believer. Notice how the righteous respond to trials: they do not retaliate with anger, nor do they despair, nor do they lose trust in Allah. Instead, they combine patience with reliance upon Allah, and they leave the outcome to Him.
The "beautiful patience" mentioned here is a hallmark of true faith. It is patience without complaint to people, without questioning the divine decree, and without losing hope in Allah's mercy. When trials befall you, remember that the Prophets themselves faced far greater tests — the loss of a son, betrayal by family, and prolonged hardship — yet they remained steadfast, knowing that Allah's wisdom surpasses human understanding.
Moreover, this verse teaches us that falsehood, no matter how carefully crafted, carries within it the seeds of its own exposure. The brothers thought their lie was perfect, but a single detail — an untorn shirt — unraveled their entire scheme. Truth is always evident to those who seek it sincerely, and Allah protects His righteous servants.
Let this be a source of comfort: when you are wronged, when people deceive you, when life becomes heavy — do not let your heart be shaken. Say as Ya'qub said: "Beautiful patience, and Allah is the One whose help is sought." Turn to Allah with a heart free of rancor, and He will surely open for you a way out, just as He reunited Ya'qub with his son after years of patient waiting. For indeed, after hardship comes ease, and the help of Allah is near for those who are patient.
