Key Words and Phrases:

  • نَسْتَبِقُ (nastabiq): We went to race/compete — specifically in running or archery.
  • مَتَاعِنَا (matā‘inā): Our belongings — referring to their clothes, provisions, and supplies.
  • الذِّئْبُ (al-dhi’b): The wolf.
  • بِمُؤْمِنٍ لَّنَا (bi-mu’minin lanā): Believing/trusting us — i.e., accepting our words as true.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, the brothers of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph) return to their father, Prophet Ya‘qub (Jacob), with a fabricated story to cover up the terrible deed they had committed. They said: "O our father, we went off to race with one another — competing in running and archery — and we left Yusuf with our belongings to guard them. Then, while we were occupied, a wolf came and devoured him."

They tried to make the story sound plausible by mentioning that they left him with their possessions — implying that they did not neglect him, but rather entrusted him with a task. Yet, they knew this was a lie. They had actually thrown Yusuf into a well after plotting against him out of jealousy.

Then they added a clever rhetorical twist: "But you will not believe us, even if we were truthful." This was a psychological maneuver — they anticipated their father’s grief and suspicion, and by saying this, they attempted to deflect his doubt by making it seem as though his lack of trust in them was merely due to his excessive love for Yusuf, not because their story was false. In reality, their father’s heart was filled with sorrow and unease, for he sensed something was deeply wrong.

Reflection and Lessons:

This verse teaches us profound lessons about honesty, family bonds, and the consequences of deceit. The brothers of Yusuf allowed envy to cloud their hearts, leading them to betray their own brother and then lie to their father — a man of noble character and deep faith. Their words reveal how far they had strayed from the path of righteousness.

As believers, we are reminded that truthfulness is a cornerstone of faith. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. A man continues to speak the truth until he is recorded with Allah as a truthful one. And lying leads to wickedness, and wickedness leads to the Fire. A man continues to tell lies until he is recorded with Allah as a liar." (Agreed upon)

Moreover, this story shows us the immense patience and trust in Allah that Prophet Ya‘qub displayed. Despite the crushing news, he later said: "I only complain of my grief and sorrow to Allah" (12:86). He did not lose hope in Allah’s mercy, and ultimately, Allah reunited him with his beloved son Yusuf after years of separation.

Dear reader, let this verse inspire you to guard your tongue, cherish your family, and place your complete trust in Allah. No matter how difficult the trials, know that Allah’s plan is perfect, and He never abandons those who remain patient and faithful. The story of Yusuf is a beacon of hope — a reminder that after every hardship comes ease, and that truth, though it may be hidden for a time, will always prevail in the end.
