Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Yamhu (يَمْحُو): He erases, removes, or blots out.
- Yuthbit (يُثْبِتُ): He establishes, confirms, or keeps.
- Umm al-Kitab (أُمُّ الْكِتَابِ): The Mother of the Book — the Preserved Tablet (al-Lawh al-Mahfuz), the original source of all divine decrees.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse reveals a profound truth about Allah’s absolute authority over all affairs. Allah, in His infinite wisdom, erases whatever He wills from His decrees — whether it be a ruling, a provision, a lifespan, or a person’s condition of happiness or hardship — and He establishes whatever He wills, keeping it firm and unchanged. This divine erasure and establishment occur according to His perfect knowledge and purpose, and they are not random or arbitrary. Every change that appears in this world, whether in the laws revealed to prophets or in the destinies of creation, is precisely recorded and predetermined in the Mother of the Book — the Preserved Tablet — which is with Allah and which no alteration or substitution can ever touch. Thus, whatever is erased or confirmed in the temporal world is a reflection of what is eternally fixed in that unchangeable source.
This verse also carries a powerful message about the abrogation of certain divine rulings: Allah may repeal a previous law through a new one, and He may keep another law in effect, all as His wisdom dictates. Yet the original, unchanging foundation of all decrees remains safe with Him, immune to any change.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, ponder the majesty of this verse: the One who manages the universe and its affairs is none other than Allah, the All-Wise, the All-Knowing. He alone decides what remains and what passes away, and nothing escapes His knowledge. This should fill your heart with tranquility and trust, for you know that every change in your life — whether ease or difficulty, gain or loss — is part of a divine plan recorded in a Book that never errs. So turn to Him with sincere reliance, and let your heart find peace in His decree. For the Muslim, this is a source of immense comfort: even when circumstances shift, the ultimate decree is with Allah, and He is the best of planners. Embrace this truth, and you will discover a serenity that no worldly change can disturb.
