Surah Ar-Ra'd — Verse 38

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah addresses the critics of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) who found it strange that he married women and had a family. Allah reminds them that this was not something new or unusual—He sent many messengers before him, and they too were human beings with wives and children. They were not angels; they lived normal lives, married, and had offspring, just like other people. So why should the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) be any different? His humanity and his family life were not a contradiction to his prophethood; rather, they were part of the natural pattern of all the messengers who came before him.

The verse then addresses another criticism: the disbelievers demanded that the Prophet bring them specific miracles of their choosing. Allah clarifies that no messenger has the power or the right to produce a miracle on his own whim. Miracles occur only by Allah’s permission and according to His will. A messenger is merely a servant and a conveyer of the message; the power to perform wonders rests solely with Allah, the Almighty.

Finally, the verse concludes with a profound truth: "For every matter there is a decree (and an appointed time)." Everything that happens—whether it is the coming of a miracle, the success of a mission, or the punishment of a nation—is already written in Allah’s knowledge and recorded in His book. Nothing occurs before its time, and nothing is delayed beyond it. This brings comfort to the believers, reminding them that Allah’s plan is perfect and that everything unfolds according to His wisdom.
