Word Meanings:

  • اغْفِرْ (ighfir): Forgive, cover, and erase sins.
  • وَالِدَيَّ (wālidayya): My two parents (father and mother).
  • لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ (lil-mu'minīn): For the believing men and women.
  • يَوْمَ يَقُومُ الْحِسَابُ (yawma yaqūmu al-ḥisāb): The Day when the Reckoning is established — the Day of Judgment when all creation stands before Allah for accountability.

Explanation of the Verse:

This is the closing supplication of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham, peace be upon him), a beautiful and profound du'a that he made after completing the construction of the Kaaba and establishing the rites of worship. In this verse, he turns to his Lord with humility and compassion, asking for forgiveness on three levels:

First, he asks for his own forgiveness: *"Our Lord, forgive me."* This teaches us that even the greatest prophets — the most beloved of Allah's creation — recognized their human shortcomings and constantly sought Allah's pardon. It reminds us that no one is free from error, and the door of repentance is always open.

Second, he asks for his parents: *"and my parents."* It is important to note that this supplication was made before it became clear to him that his father was an enemy of Allah. At that time, he still hoped for his father's guidance and Islam. When it later became evident that his father would die upon disbelief, Ibrahim disassociated himself from him, as mentioned in another verse of the Qur'an. This shows us the beautiful balance in Islam: we honor and pray for our parents out of love and kindness, but we do not compromise our faith. It also highlights the immense virtue of praying for one's parents — a deed that continues to benefit them even after death.

Third, he asks for all believers: *"and for the believers on the Day when the Reckoning is established."* This is a profound lesson in selflessness and brotherhood. Even while standing in supplication for himself and his family, Ibrahim did not forget the wider community of believers — those he knew and those he would never meet, across all times and places. This is the spirit of Islamic unity: we are one body, and when one part feels pain, the whole body shares in it.

The phrase *"on the Day when the Reckoning is established"* reminds us of that inevitable moment when every soul will stand before its Creator, and no wealth, status, or family ties will avail anyone — only faith and righteous deeds. Ibrahim's du'a reflects his deep awareness of that Day and his desire to be saved from its terrors, along with his parents and all believers.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, look at the character of this great prophet. He was called the "Friend of Allah" (Khalilullah), yet he never stopped seeking forgiveness. He built the most sacred house on earth, yet he remained humble and dependent on his Lord's mercy. He was a father and a son, yet he balanced his family ties with his devotion to Allah.

This verse invites you to adopt this prophetic du'a as your own. Make it a habit to pray for yourself, your parents — whether they are alive or have passed away — and for the entire Muslim ummah. Imagine the reward: every time you sincerely ask Allah to forgive the believers, the angels say "Ameen" and you receive the same for yourself.

And remember: the Day of Reckoning is real and near. No one knows when it will come, but everyone knows that it will come. Prepare for it today by turning to Allah in repentance, by honoring your parents, and by loving for your fellow believers what you love for yourself. This is the path of Ibrahim, and it is the path to Allah's pleasure and Paradise.

📜 Verse 39-43 — Ibrahim

Praise to Allah, who has granted to me in old age Ishmael and Isaac. Indeed, my Lord is the Hearer of supplication.
My Lord, make me an establisher of prayer, and [many] from my descendants. Our Lord, and accept my supplication.
Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers the Day the account is established."
And never think that Allah is unaware of what the wrongdoers do. He only delays them for a Day when eyes will stare [in horror].
Racing ahead, their heads raised up, their glance does not come back to them, and their hearts are void.
