Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Mutawassimeen (الْمُتَوَسِّمِينَ): Those who reflect deeply, observe carefully, and draw lessons from signs; the perceptive ones who see beyond the surface and recognize the truth through contemplation.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah draws attention to the fate that befell the people of Prophet Lot (peace be upon him) — a people who were destroyed for their grave sins and defiance of Allah's commands. Allah states that in this historical event — the punishment, the overturned cities, and the remnants of their destruction — there are profound signs and lessons for those who possess insight and who ponder over the universe and the events within it.
These signs are not hidden or obscure; they are visible to anyone who travels through the region where this punishment occurred, as the ruins remained as a stark reminder. Yet, the verse emphasizes that only al-mutawassimeen — those who use their intellect and heart to reflect — will truly benefit from these lessons. They are the ones who look at the world with the eye of wisdom, who do not pass by such events carelessly, but instead pause, reflect, and recognize the hand of Allah in history.
The destruction of the people of Lot was not a random catastrophe; it was a divine response to their corruption, arrogance, and rejection of the message of truth. For the believer, this story serves as a confirmation that Allah's promise of justice is certain, and that His punishment awaits those who persist in evil. For the seeker of truth, it is an open invitation to examine the evidence of divine power and wisdom.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, Allah has placed signs everywhere — in the heavens, in the earth, and in the stories of past nations — but these signs only benefit those who open their hearts and minds. The Qur'an repeatedly calls us to be among the perceptive ones, those who do not live life in heedlessness, but who see every event as a message from their Creator. When you read about the destruction of past nations, do not let it pass as mere history. Ask yourself: What is the lesson for me today? How can I strengthen my faith, correct my path, and draw closer to Allah? This is the way of the wise — to turn every sign into a step toward Paradise. May Allah make us among those who truly see, reflect, and act upon His signs.
