Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- ʿĀliyahā – its upper part (the top of the towns).
- Sāfilahā – its lower part (the bottom, turned upside down).
- Amṭarnā – We rained down (a rain of punishment, not mercy).
- Sijjīl – baked clay stones, hardened and solid, like the stones of hellfire mentioned in other verses.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse describes the catastrophic punishment that befell the people of Lot (peace be upon him) after their persistent defiance and immorality. When their wickedness reached its peak and they rejected every warning, Allah’s decree of destruction was carried out. The angel Gabriel (peace be upon him) lifted the entire land—the towns where they lived—up to the heavens, then flipped it over and hurled it back down to the earth. Thus, what was once their high, elevated buildings and structures became their graves, buried beneath the rubble. The upper parts of their homes were turned into the lower parts, and nothing remained standing.
Then, to complete the punishment, Allah rained down upon the scattered survivors—those who were outside the towns at the time—stones of hardened, baked clay (sijjīl). These stones were not ordinary rocks; they were a divine punishment, precise and inescapable, striking each transgressor wherever they fled. This was a punishment that combined utter humiliation (the overturning of their world) with physical destruction (the rain of stones), leaving no room for escape or repentance at that final moment.
This event serves as a timeless lesson for humanity: when a society abandons the bounds set by Allah and persists in sin, no power on earth can protect it from His wrath. The very ground they trusted became their enemy, and the sky poured down their doom. Yet, in His mercy, Allah always sends warnings before punishment—just as He sent Lot to his people—so that those who heed may be saved, and only the obstinate are destroyed.
A Da‘wah Reflection:
Dear reader, look at how Allah describes His justice and His mercy side by side. He does not punish a people until they have been clearly warned, and He gives ample time for repentance. The people of Lot had a prophet among them, calling them day and night, but they mocked him and persisted. When the punishment came, it was absolute and undeniable. This is a reminder for us today: Allah is patient, but His justice is certain. Do not let the fleeting pleasures of this world blind you to the consequences of sin. Turn back to Him now, before the “rain” comes—not a rain of mercy, but of regret. The door of repentance is open, and Allah’s mercy is far greater than His wrath. He says: “Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins” (Az-Zumar 39:53). So hasten to His forgiveness, and be among those who are saved, not among those who are overturned.
