Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Anzala (أَنزَلَ): Sent down, brought down from above.
  • Sharāb (شَرَابٌ): Drink, beverage — that which is consumed for quenching thirst.
  • Shajar (شَجَرٌ): Trees, vegetation, plants that grow from the earth.
  • Tusīmūn (تُسِيمُونَ): You pasture your livestock — from *sāmat al-māshiyah*, meaning the animals graze freely.

Explanation of the Verse:

Allah — glorified and exalted — reminds His servants of one of His greatest blessings: He is the One who sends down rain from the sky. From this water, He provides you with fresh, pure drinking water that quenches your thirst and sustains your very life. And from the same water, He causes trees and vegetation to grow, so that your livestock may graze upon it. Through this grazing, your animals grow strong, produce milk, and multiply — all of which returns benefit to you in countless ways.

This single verse captures a magnificent cycle of divine mercy: rain falls from the sky, the earth drinks it, vegetation springs forth, animals feed on it, and you — human beings — receive nourishment, drink, and livelihood from it all. It is a chain of provision that begins and ends with Allah's grace alone.

A Call to Reflection and Gratitude:

Dear reader, pause and reflect: have you ever truly considered the journey of a single drop of rain? It falls from the clouds, soaks into the soil, feeds the roots of a tree, which then bears fruit for you to eat, or grass for your sheep to graze upon. Who orchestrated this perfect system? Who ensured that water would be tasteless yet perfectly suited to quench thirst, while making it capable of nurturing life in the barren earth?

This is not mere coincidence — it is the handiwork of the Most Merciful, who says in another verse: *"And We made from water every living thing"* (Al-Anbiyā' 21:30). Water is the essence of life, and Allah has placed it at your service freely, without you having to pay a price or earn it.

So let this verse awaken your heart. When you drink a glass of cool water on a hot day, remember the One who sent it down. When you see green pastures and thriving livestock, remember that it is Allah who brought them forth. Let gratitude fill your heart, and let your tongue utter: *Alhamdulillāh* — all praise belongs to Allah.

And know that the One who provides water from the sky and vegetation from the earth is the same One who invites you to worship Him alone, to seek His forgiveness, and to draw near to Him. He has given you these blessings not because you deserve them, but out of His infinite mercy — so that you might come to know Him, love Him, and submit to Him. Will you not respond to such a generous Lord with obedience and thankfulness?
