Translation — Tafsir
Meanings of Key Words:
- Qasd al-Sabeel: The straight, balanced, and upright path.
- Ja’ir: A path that deviates or swerves away from the truth and righteousness.
- Hadaakum: To guide you, to show you the way to success and salvation.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah, in His infinite wisdom and mercy, declares that it is His right and His responsibility to make clear the straight path that leads to His pleasure and to eternal success—this path is Islam, the religion of pure monotheism and submission to the Creator. This is the path of balance, justice, and moderation, the path that aligns with the natural disposition (fitrah) with which Allah created humanity. Alongside this clear, upright way, there exist other paths that are crooked and deviant—these are the ways of misguidance, the paths of disbelief, innovation, and sin, which lead only to ruin and loss. Every path other than the path of Islam is a deviant one, no matter how attractive or alluring it may appear.
Then Allah reminds us of His absolute power and sovereignty: had He willed, He could have compelled every single human being to believe and to walk upon the straight path, leaving no room for choice or trial. But His divine wisdom required that He grant humanity free will, so that they may be tested in this worldly life—who among them chooses the truth willingly, and who turns away from it. This is a profound reminder that guidance is a gift from Allah, and that we must constantly seek it, while also recognizing that the choice to accept or reject it lies with us.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, reflect on this magnificent truth: the Creator of the heavens and the earth has not left you wandering in confusion. He has sent down His guidance, clarified the path of success, and warned you of the paths of destruction. This is the ultimate mercy—that you are not left without a map. The straight path is open before you, illuminated by the light of revelation and the example of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Do not let the deceptive allure of deviant paths distract you, for they lead only to regret. Embrace the path of Islam with a sincere heart, and you will find peace in this life and salvation in the next. Allah’s door of guidance is open to all who sincerely seek it—so turn to Him, and let Him guide your steps to His eternal pleasure.
