Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- رِزْقًا (rizqan): Sustenance or provision — everything that sustains life, whether food, drink, or other means of survival.
- مِنَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ (mina al-samawati wal-ard): From the heavens (such as rain) and from the earth (such as vegetation and crops).
- لَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ (la yastati'un): They are unable — meaning they lack the power, ability, or even the capacity to do so.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) exposes the utter folly of the polytheists who worship idols and false deities besides Him. These idols — whether carved from stone, wood, or metal — possess absolutely nothing. They cannot grant a single morsel of food, a drop of rain, or any form of sustenance to their worshippers. They own no provision from the heavens above, such as rainfall that brings life to barren lands, nor from the earth below, such as crops, fruits, and livestock that sustain human existence.
The verse emphasizes that these false gods do not merely lack the ability to provide — they cannot even *strive* to obtain provision, nor can they ever hope to acquire such power. They are lifeless objects, deaf, blind, and utterly incapable of any action. They cannot hear the prayers of their worshippers, nor can they respond, nor can they help in any way, whether in this world or the next.
How astonishing it is that human beings, endowed with intellect, would abandon the worship of the All-Mighty Provider — the One who sends down rain from the skies, brings forth vegetation from the earth, and sustains every living creature — to bow before lifeless statues that cannot even protect themselves from dust or decay, let alone provide for their devotees!
This verse serves as a powerful reminder for every believer: our provision comes solely from Allah. He is the sole Sustainer, the One who opens the gates of mercy and abundance. When we place our trust in Him alone, we align ourselves with the truth of existence. The idols of this world — whether they are material possessions, status, or false deities — can never truly provide for us. Only Allah, the Most Generous, the Provider of all sustenance, deserves our worship, our gratitude, and our complete reliance.
Let this verse inspire you to reflect: if you place your hopes in Allah alone, you will never be disappointed, for His treasures are limitless and His mercy encompasses all things. Turn to Him with a sincere heart, and He will open for you doors of provision from places you could never imagine.
