Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • "Thamanan Qaleela" (ثَمَنًا قَلِيلًا): A small price or a paltry worldly gain — referring to any fleeting, insignificant benefit of this life that one might receive in exchange for breaking a promise made to Allah.
  • "Ahd Allah" (عَهْدِ اللَّهِ): The covenant of Allah — which includes His commands, prohibitions, and the promises believers make to Him, such as upholding faith, truthfulness, and fulfilling obligations.
  • "Khayr" (خَيْرٌ): Better, more beneficial, and more enduring.

Explanation of the Verse:

Allah, in His infinite mercy and wisdom, addresses His believing servants with a profound and timeless reminder: "And do not exchange the covenant of Allah for a small price." This means: do not break your promises and obligations toward Allah — whether they are acts of worship, honesty, or upholding justice — in return for some fleeting worldly gain, no matter how attractive it may appear. Such gains are described as "small" because, compared to the eternal rewards of the Hereafter, every worldly possession and pleasure is utterly insignificant and temporary.

The verse continues: "Indeed, what is with Allah is better for you, if you only knew." Here, Allah directs the believers' attention to the supreme truth: whatever reward Allah has prepared for those who remain steadfast and faithful — be it victory and provision in this life, or the everlasting bliss of Paradise in the next — is infinitely superior to any transient benefit they might obtain by compromising their faith or breaking their word. If people truly understood the vast difference between the fleeting pleasures of this world and the eternal treasures of the Hereafter, they would never trade their honor and their covenant with Allah for such a meager price.

This verse was revealed in a context where some individuals were tempted to break their pledges for worldly advantages, and it serves as a universal lesson for all believers across time. It calls upon us to reflect deeply: What could possibly be worth more than the pleasure of Allah and the promise of His eternal reward? A few coins? A momentary status? A passing desire? None of these can compare to what Allah has in store for the patient and the faithful.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear believer, let this verse awaken your heart! Allah is not asking you to give up the world entirely — He is simply reminding you that your covenant with Him is far too precious to be sold for anything less than His eternal pleasure. When you keep your promises to Allah — by praying, by being honest, by treating others with justice and kindness — you are not losing anything; rather, you are investing in a treasure that never fades.

Think of the beautiful promise of Allah: He never abandons those who remain loyal to Him. He grants them peace in their hearts, blessings in their lives, and ultimately, the highest gardens of Paradise where no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human mind can imagine. So, be among those who truly "know" — not just with their minds, but with their hearts and actions. Choose the eternal over the temporary, and you will find that Allah's reward is far greater than anything this world can ever offer.

📜 Verse 93-97 — An-Nahl

And if Allah had willed, He could have made you [of] one religion, but He causes to stray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And you will surely be questioned about what you used to do.
And do not take your oaths as [means of] deceit between you, lest a foot slip after it was [once] firm, and you would taste evil [in this world] for what [people] you diverted from the way of Allah, and you would have [in the Hereafter] a great punishment.
And do not exchange the covenant of Allah for a small price. Indeed, what is with Allah is best for you, if only you could know.
Whatever you have will end, but what Allah has is lasting. And We will surely give those who were patient their reward according to the best of what they used to do.
Whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while he is a believer - We will surely cause him to live a good life, and We will surely give them their reward [in the Hereafter] according to the best of what they used to do.
