Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Subḥānahu (سُبْحَانَهُ): Declaration of Allah’s absolute perfection and transcendence above any flaw, deficiency, or imperfection.
- Taʿālā (وَتَعَالَىٰ): He is Exalted and Elevated far above any attribute or description that does not befit His majesty.
- ʿAm mā yaqūlūn (عَمَّا يَقُولُونَ): From what they (the polytheists) say — i.e., their false claims that Allah has partners, a son, or any equal.
- ʿUlūwwan kabīrā (عُلُوًّا كَبِيرًا): An immense, supreme exaltation — far, far above any such statements.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse comes as a powerful, divine response to the absurd claims of the polytheists who dared to attribute partners, offspring, or equals to Allah. After they uttered their falsehoods, Allah declares His own perfection and transcendence in the most emphatic way.
The verse proclaims: Glory be to Allah — He is free from every imperfection, deficiency, or likeness to His creation. And He is Exalted — His majesty rises infinitely above anything they say. The phrase "an immense exaltation" (ʿulūwwan kabīrā) emphasizes that the distance between Allah’s glorious reality and their false descriptions is beyond measure — it is not a small or ordinary elevation, but an infinite, absolute transcendence.
This is a declaration of Allah’s absolute uniqueness (tawḥīd). He is not like anything in His creation — He has no partner, no son, no daughter, no equal, no rival. The polytheists’ words do not diminish His glory in the least; rather, they only expose their own ignorance and misguidance.
A Daʿwah Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder the greatness of this verse. When people utter falsehoods about Allah — whether in the past or today — their words have no effect on His majesty whatsoever. He remains perfect, exalted, and supreme, regardless of what anyone claims. This should fill your heart with awe and reverence for your Lord.
At the same time, this verse invites you to purify your own belief. Examine your heart: Do you truly worship Allah alone? Do you describe Him only as He has described Himself — without distortion, without comparison, and without denial? The more you know Allah through His names and attributes, the more your love, fear, and hope in Him grow.
This verse is a call to free your tongue from speaking about Allah without knowledge, and to fill it instead with glorification: "SubḥānAllah wa biḥamdih" (Glory and praise be to Allah). For the one who glorifies Allah sincerely, Allah elevates his rank in this life and the next. Let this verse be a reminder that your Lord is far above every imperfection — so worship Him with certainty, and trust in His absolute perfection and wisdom in all His decrees.
