Word Meanings:

  • Ālihah (آلِهَة): gods or deities that are worshipped.
  • Lābtaghaw (لَابْتَغَوْا): they would have sought or striven for.
  • Dhī al-ʿArsh (ذِي الْعَرْش): the Owner of the Throne, i.e., Allah, the Supreme and Exalted.
  • Sabīlan (سَبِيلًا): a path or way.

Explanation of the Verse:

O Messenger, say to those who associate partners with Allah in worship: If there were other gods alongside Allah, as you falsely claim and invent, then those alleged deities would have sought a way to the Lord of the Mighty Throne — striving to overcome Him, compete with Him, or challenge His supreme authority. This is the way of worldly kings, where rivals seek to overpower one another. But since no such attempt has ever occurred, and no deity has ever tried to rival Allah, this proves that no other god exists. The very fact that the universe remains in perfect order, with no conflict or competition among gods, is clear evidence that Allah alone is the One True God, the Sovereign of all creation.

A Daʿwah Reflection:

This verse invites us to use our intellect and observe the harmony of the universe. If there were multiple gods, each with their own will and power, chaos would inevitably follow — each would try to assert dominance over the other, just as competing rulers do. Yet we see the heavens and the earth functioning with flawless precision, the sun and moon following their courses, and life continuing in perfect balance. This unbroken order is a living testimony that there is only One God, who alone deserves our worship. Let this reflection draw you closer to Him, for the Qur’an constantly calls you to ponder and reason, so that your faith is built on certainty, not blind imitation. Embrace the oneness of Allah, and you will find peace in your heart and clarity in your purpose.

📜 Verse 40-44 — Al-Isra

Then, has your Lord chosen you for [having] sons and taken from among the angels daughters? Indeed, you say a grave saying.
And We have certainly diversified [the contents] in this Qur'an that mankind may be reminded, but it does not increase the disbelievers except in aversion.
Say, [O Muhammad], "If there had been with Him [other] gods, as they say, then they [each] would have sought to the Owner of the Throne a way."
Exalted is He and high above what they say by great sublimity.
The seven heavens and the earth and whatever is in them exalt Him. And there is not a thing except that it exalts [Allah] by His praise, but you do not understand their [way of] exalting. Indeed, He is ever Forbearing and Forgiving.
