Word Meanings:
- Duluk al-shams (دُلُوكِ الشَّمْسِ): The sun's decline from its zenith (midday) towards its setting — i.e., its inclination after noon.
- Ghasaq al-layl (غَسَقِ اللَّيْلِ): The darkness of the night, when it becomes fully dark.
- Qur'an al-fajr (قُرْآنَ الْفَجْرِ): The dawn prayer (Salat al-Fajr), called "Qur'an" because the recitation in it is lengthy and is a prominent part of it.
Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse is a direct command from Allah to His Prophet ﷺ — and by extension, to the entire Muslim Ummah — to establish the five daily prayers at their appointed times with full devotion and perfection.
Allah says: "Establish the prayer at the decline of the sun" — meaning from the moment the sun passes its zenith and begins to incline towards the west, which marks the time for the Zuhr (midday) prayer, and continues through the time of the Asr (afternoon) prayer. Then He says: "until the darkness of the night" — which encompasses the Maghrib (sunset) prayer and the Isha (night) prayer. So the first part of the verse covers four of the five daily prayers.
Then Allah specifically mentions: "and the Qur'an of the dawn" — referring to the Fajr (dawn) prayer, which is singled out for special mention because of its great virtue and unique status. It is called "Qur'an" because the recitation in it is long and is recited aloud, making it a distinctive act of worship.
Then Allah explains the special honor of this prayer: "Indeed, the Qur'an of the dawn is witnessed" — meaning that the angels of the night and the angels of the day both attend it. When the night angels ascend and the day angels descend, they meet at the time of Fajr, and they all bear witness to this prayer. This is a tremendous honor that highlights the excellence of praying Fajr in congregation.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear Muslim brother or sister — imagine the scene: as you rise in the darkness of the early morning, leaving your warm bed for the sake of Allah, the angels of the night and the angels of the day are both present, witnessing your prayer and recording your devotion. What a beautiful moment to connect with your Creator! This verse reminds us that the Fajr prayer is not merely an obligation — it is an appointment with Allah that the angels themselves attend. Whoever preserves this prayer preserves a light in their heart that will guide them through the darkness of this world and the darkness of the grave. And whoever neglects it loses a treasure beyond measure. So let us strive to establish all our prayers, especially the dawn prayer, with sincerity and presence of heart, for it is a witness to our faith and a means of drawing closer to the Most Merciful.
