Key Words and Meanings:

  • تَهَجَّدْ (tahajjad): To wake up from sleep to perform prayer, specifically the voluntary night prayer.
  • نَافِلَةً (nāfilah): An additional, supererogatory act of worship beyond the obligatory duties.
  • مَقَامًا مَّحْمُودًا (maqāman maḥmūdan): A praiseworthy station/position, referring to the highest rank of intercession on the Day of Judgment.

Explanation of the Verse:

O Prophet, rise from your sleep during a portion of the night and devote yourself to prayer, reciting the Qur’an in your voluntary night prayers. This act of worship is an extra gift for you—an elevation of your rank and a means of drawing closer to your Lord. It is a special honor bestowed upon you, increasing your status above all others.

Your Lord promises you a station of immense glory and praise—the Maqām al-Maḥmūd—the praiseworthy intercession on the Day of Judgment. On that terrifying Day, when all of humanity stands in distress, seeking someone to intercede on their behalf before Allah, the prophets will each decline, excusing themselves. But you, O Muhammad, will step forward and intercede for the people, asking your Lord to relieve their suffering and begin the Judgment. This is the station that the first and the last will praise you for, and it is a rank that no other creation will attain.

This verse is a profound reminder of the honor and mercy Allah has granted to His beloved Prophet ﷺ, and through him, to all of humanity. The night prayer was obligatory upon the Prophet ﷺ as a special distinction, while for his Ummah, it remains a highly recommended act of devotion—a means of drawing closer to Allah, seeking His forgiveness, and following the footsteps of the best of creation.

A Call to Action for the Believers:

Dear believer, if the Prophet ﷺ was commanded to stand in prayer during the night despite his sinless status and guaranteed Paradise, how much more do we—who are laden with sins and shortcomings—need this blessed act? The night prayer is a treasure that many neglect. It is a time when the gates of heaven are open, and the Lord descends to the lowest heaven, asking, "Who is calling upon Me so I may respond? Who is seeking forgiveness so I may forgive?"

Make it a habit to pray even a few rak‘ahs in the last third of the night. Seek Allah’s forgiveness, pour out your heart to Him, and ask for His guidance. This is the path of the righteous, the way to purify your soul, and the means to attain Allah’s love and mercy. And who knows—perhaps through your devotion, Allah will grant you a high station in the Hereafter and the honor of being among those who intercede for their loved ones.

Let the example of the Prophet ﷺ inspire you. His night prayers were not just a duty but a beloved act of worship that brought him closer to his Lord. Follow his Sunnah, and you will find peace in your heart, light in your life, and success in both worlds.

[That is Our] established way for those We had sent before you of Our messengers; and you will not find in Our way any alteration.
Establish prayer at the decline of the sun [from its meridian] until the darkness of the night and [also] the Qur'an of dawn. Indeed, the recitation of dawn is ever witnessed.
And from [part of] the night, pray with it as additional [worship] for you; it is expected that your Lord will resurrect you to a praised station.
And say, "My Lord, cause me to enter a sound entrance and to exit a sound exit and grant me from Yourself a supporting authority."
And say, "Truth has come, and falsehood has departed. Indeed is falsehood, [by nature], ever bound to depart."
