Surah Al-Isra — Verse 91

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, the disbelievers of Makkah—who were obstinate in their rejection of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)—continued to set impossible conditions for believing in him. Among their demands was that he should possess a magnificent garden of date palms and grapevines, so lush and fertile that rivers would gush forth and flow continuously through its very midst, irrigating every corner of it with abundant, ever-flowing water.

This demand was not born of sincere seeking of truth, but rather of stubbornness and an unwillingness to accept the clear signs already shown to them. They wanted worldly grandeur as proof of prophethood, failing to realize that Allah grants worldly wealth to both the righteous and the wicked, while true prophethood is confirmed by revelation, miracles, and moral excellence—not by material possessions.

There is a profound lesson here for every believer. The disbelievers demanded gardens and rivers as proof, yet the Prophet (peace be upon him) brought something far greater: the living miracle of the Qur’an, a book that guides hearts, reforms souls, and has transformed civilizations. The gardens they asked for would wither and decay, but the guidance of the Qur’an remains fresh and evergreen until the end of time.

Dear reader, reflect on this: how often do we, too, ask Allah for signs while ignoring the countless signs already around us? The sun that rises each day, the rain that revives dead earth, the breath in our lungs—all are greater miracles than any garden. Allah invites you not to demand proofs, but to open your heart to the truth that is already before you. The Qur’an is the eternal garden whose rivers are wisdom and mercy, flowing endlessly for those who drink from it. Will you not taste its sweetness?
