Surah Al-Isra — Verse 90

Tafsir (Explanation):

When the Qur’an’s miraculous nature overwhelmed the disbelievers of Makkah and left them without argument, they stubbornly shifted from seeking truth to making unreasonable demands out of arrogance and obstinacy. They said to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him): “We will never believe in you or follow your message until you cause a spring to gush forth for us from the earth of Makkah—a flowing, never-ending fountain of water.” This was not a sincere request for guidance, but a challenge rooted in defiance, as they had already witnessed the greatest miracle—the Qur’an itself—which no human or jinn could produce. Their demand was a test of their own stubborn hearts, not a genuine search for proof.

This verse teaches us a profound lesson: the disbelievers of old were never satisfied with any sign, because their problem was not a lack of evidence, but a hardness of heart. They kept moving the goalposts, asking for one miracle after another, yet when miracles did come—like the splitting of the moon—they still turned away. As believers, we must reflect on the countless signs Allah has already placed before us: the Qur’an, the universe, our own creation, and the guidance of the Prophet (peace be upon him). True faith is not about demanding spectacular displays, but about opening our hearts to the truth that has already been made clear. Allah, in His infinite mercy, gave humanity the greatest and most lasting miracle—the Qur’an—which remains alive and relevant for all times, calling us to salvation. Let us not be like those who reject the clear truth while asking for more, but rather be among those who respond with sincerity and submission, for that is the path to eternal success.
