When Prophet Zakariyyā (peace be upon him) received the glad tidings of a son despite his old age and his wife’s barrenness, he did not doubt the power of his Lord for a moment. Rather, out of a deep longing for reassurance and a desire to witness the divine mercy unfolding before his very eyes, he humbly asked: *“My Lord, grant me a sign.”* This was not a request born of skepticism, but a plea from a loving heart seeking a tangible marker to celebrate the coming blessing.

Allah, the Most Merciful, responded to his supplication with a sign that was both miraculous and gentle: *“Your sign is that you will not speak to the people for three nights, while being perfectly sound.”* This meant that Zakariyyā would be physically healthy, with no illness, no injury, and no affliction of the tongue—yet he would be prevented from speaking to people for three full nights and their days. He would be able to read, remember, and glorify his Lord, but human conversation would be withheld from him. This was a clear and undeniable proof that the divine promise was true, for such a state could only come about by the will of Allah.

This sign also carried a profound wisdom: it gave Zakariyyā the blessed opportunity to devote himself entirely to worship, remembrance, and gratitude in seclusion, preparing his heart for the great responsibility of raising a prophet like Yahyā (peace be upon him).
