Surah Maryam — Verse 9

Word Meanings:

• "كَذَٰلِكَ" — "Thus" or "Even so," referring to the matter being as described.
• "هَيِّنٌ" — Easy, simple, not difficult.
• "وَلَمْ تَكُ شَيْئًا" — "And you were not a thing," meaning you were nothing, nonexistent, unremembered.

Explanation of the Verse:

The angel (Gabriel, peace be upon him) replied to Prophet Zachariah (peace be upon him), who had expressed astonishment at the glad tidings of a son despite his old age and his wife's barrenness: "Even so — it is as you have said, and your Lord has declared: 'This is easy for Me.'" The angel then reminded Zachariah of an even greater proof of Allah's limitless power: "And I created you before, when you were nothing." That is, Allah brought Zachariah himself into existence from absolute nothingness — he was not a thing mentioned, known, or existing in any form. The One who created him from nothing is fully capable of granting him a child from an aged father and a barren mother. This is a profound reminder that Allah’s creative power is not bound by natural causes or human limitations; what appears impossible to us is simply a command from Him, and He says to it, "Be," and it is.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear believer, let this verse awaken your heart to the majesty of your Creator. The same Allah who brought you into being when you were nothing — who shaped you in your mother's womb and gave you life, hearing, sight, and reason — is fully able to answer your prayers, remove your difficulties, and grant you what you deem impossible. Never let despair creep into your soul, for the One who created the heavens and the earth is closer to you than your own jugular vein. When you raise your hands in supplication, remember that He hears, He knows, and He can do all things. Trust in Him, for His mercy encompasses everything, and His power knows no bounds. Let this verse be a source of hope and strength in every trial, and let it draw you closer to the One who says: "Call upon Me; I will respond to you" (Ghafir 40:60).
