Surah Maryam — Verse 16

Tafsir (Explanation):

O Messenger, recite and convey to your people the story of Maryam (Mary), peace be upon her, as it is revealed in the Qur’an — for in her story lies a profound lesson and a shining example of faith and devotion. When she withdrew from her family and people, she sought solitude in a place on the eastern side of Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem). This was not a mere physical retreat; it was a spiritual turning inward, a moment of seclusion chosen to devote herself wholly to worship and to prepare her heart for what Allah had destined. She distanced herself from the noise of daily life, seeking a quiet corner where she could contemplate her Creator and submit fully to His will. This withdrawal was a prelude to one of the greatest miracles of Allah’s power — the birth of Prophet ‘Isa (Jesus), peace be upon him, without a father, as a sign for all of humanity.

In this verse, Allah invites us to reflect on the purity and piety of Maryam, a woman chosen above all women of the worlds. Her story teaches us the value of sincere devotion, the importance of seeking moments of solitude for worship and reflection, and the absolute trust in Allah’s plan even when circumstances seem mysterious or difficult. Just as Maryam withdrew to a quiet place to draw closer to her Lord, we too are encouraged to carve out moments in our busy lives to disconnect from distractions and reconnect with Allah — through prayer, remembrance, and contemplation of His signs. Her unwavering faith, her patience, and her complete submission to the divine will are timeless examples for every believer, male and female, to emulate. Indeed, in her story there is a gentle reminder that when we turn to Allah with a sincere heart, He never abandons us, and He opens doors of mercy and blessing beyond our imagination.
