Word Meanings:
- Salāmun (سَلَامٌ): Peace, safety, and security; a greeting of protection from all harm.
- Yawma wulida (يَوْمَ وُلِدَ): The day he was born.
- Yawma yamūtu (يَوْمَ يَمُوتُ): The day he dies.
- Yawma yub'athu ḥayyan (يَوْمَ يُبْعَثُ حَيًّا): The day he is raised alive from the grave for the Resurrection.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse is a divine seal of honor upon Prophet Yahya (John the Baptist, peace be upon him), following the account of his miraculous birth, his unwavering devotion, and his steadfastness in righteousness. Allah declares: *"And peace be upon him the day he was born, and the day he dies, and the day he is raised alive."*
This is a comprehensive blessing of safety and security from Allah, covering the three most critical and awe-inspiring moments of every human existence. The first is the day of birth—when a soul enters this world, vulnerable and helpless, and the whisperings of Shaytan (Satan) seek to touch every newborn, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) informed us. Yet Yahya was granted immunity from that touch, born pure and protected. The second is the day of death—the moment of leaving this transient life, when the soul departs and faces the unknown; for Yahya, this was a moment of tranquility and safety from the terror of the grave and the agony of separation. The third is the Day of Resurrection—when all of humanity stands before their Lord, barefoot, naked, and uncircumcised, awaiting judgment in a scene of immense fear and anxiety; for Yahya, this will be a day of peace, security, and honor, with no fear or grief upon him.
These three moments are the most terrifying milestones for a human being—entering the world, leaving it, and standing for accountability. When Allah grants safety in these, then there is no fear for the servant in anything else. This is a beautiful reminder that true peace is not found in wealth, status, or worldly comfort, but in the protection and mercy of Allah, which He bestows upon His sincere and obedient servants.
Dear reader, reflect on this: if Allah can grant such comprehensive peace to His prophets, then He is also the One who can grant you peace in your moments of fear and uncertainty. The path to that peace is the same path Yahya walked—faith, sincerity, and obedience to Allah. Turn to Him, seek His protection, and you will find that He is the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate, ever ready to envelop you in His divine peace in this life and the next.
