Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Ḥijāb (حِجَابًا): A screen, veil, or partition that conceals and separates.
  • Rūḥanā (رُوحَنَا): Our Spirit — referring to the Angel Gabriel (Jibrīl), peace be upon him.
  • Fatamaththala (فَتَمَثَّلَ): He appeared or took on a form.
  • Sawiyyan (سَوِيًّا): Perfect, complete, well-formed — a fully grown man with no defect.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this noble verse, Allah tells us about Maryam (Mary), peace be upon her, the pure and devout servant of Allah. She had withdrawn from her family and people, seeking solitude to worship her Lord in a place away from the distractions of the world. She took a screen or veil to conceal herself from them, so that she could devote herself entirely to prayer and devotion to Allah, away from the eyes of others.

Then, Allah — in His infinite wisdom and power — sent to her His Spirit, the Angel Gabriel (Jibrīl), peace be upon him. Gabriel appeared before her in the form of a perfect, handsome, and well-proportioned man, with no physical deficiency whatsoever. This was a test and a profound moment in the unfolding of a great divine miracle.

When Maryam saw this man suddenly appear before her in her secluded place, she was alarmed and frightened, fearing that he might intend harm against her honor. This fear is mentioned in the following verse, where she seeks refuge in Allah from him.

This scene teaches us several profound lessons:

  1. The honor of seclusion for worship: Maryam sought privacy to strengthen her connection with Allah. This shows the virtue of dedicating time to sincere worship, away from the noise of life.
  2. The power of Allah over all things: Allah sent His angel in human form — a transformation that defies natural laws, reminding us that nothing is impossible for the Creator of the heavens and the earth.
  3. Purity and chastity: Maryam's immediate fear and her instinct to protect her honor reflect the highest standard of modesty and righteousness. She is a role model for all believers — men and women — in guarding their dignity and turning to Allah in times of distress.
  4. Divine support for the righteous: When Maryam isolated herself for Allah's sake, Allah did not abandon her. He sent His angel to her with a great message. Likewise, when we sincerely seek Allah and devote ourselves to Him, He guides us and sends His help in ways we cannot imagine.

Dear believer, reflect on this scene: a young woman, alone in a place of worship, suddenly faced with an unexpected visitor. Her heart turned to Allah immediately. This is the essence of true faith — turning to Allah in every moment, especially in times of fear and uncertainty. Let us learn from Maryam's example: purity of heart, devotion to Allah, and unwavering trust in His plan, even when we do not understand what is happening around us.

And know that Allah's angels are always near His righteous servants, and His help comes at the perfect time, in the most unexpected forms.
