Explanation of the Verse:
Allah, the Most Merciful, addresses the Children of Israel with a tender and profound call, reminding them of His abundant favors. He says: "O descendants of Ya‘qūb (Jacob), remember My blessings which I showered upon you — both the worldly and the religious ones — and remember that I raised you above all the nations of your time."
This verse is a gentle yet powerful reminder of Allah’s grace upon the Children of Israel. Among those blessings were: the succession of many prophets among them, the revelation of divine scriptures (such as the Torah), their deliverance from the tyranny of Pharaoh, the parting of the sea for their escape, the provision of manna and quails in the wilderness, and the shade of clouds in the scorching desert. They were also given kingship and honor that no other nation at that time possessed.
The command to "remember" here is not merely to recall, but to reflect deeply and respond with gratitude — because remembering Allah’s blessings naturally leads a person to obedience, humility, and love for the Giver. It is an invitation to recognize the Source of all goodness and to align one’s life with His guidance.
A Da‘wah Reflection:
This verse carries a timeless lesson for all of humanity, not just the Children of Israel. It teaches us that Allah’s blessings are a trust, and that true success lies in acknowledging them and using them in ways that please Him. When we look at our own lives, we find countless favors — health, family, faith, safety, and provision — that we often take for granted. The Qur’an invites us to pause, reflect, and turn to Allah with grateful hearts.
Moreover, this verse reminds us that Allah’s favor is not a license for arrogance, but a responsibility. The Children of Israel were favored so that they might lead humanity toward truth — but when they turned away, that favor was transferred to the Muslim Ummah, the final and most honored community, through the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). This is a beautiful call for us today: to cherish the greatest blessing of all — Islam and the Qur’an — and to live by it, so that we may be among those who truly remember Allah and are remembered by Him.
Let this verse inspire you to count your blessings, to thank Allah with your heart, tongue, and limbs, and to strive to be a servant who truly understands the value of Allah’s grace. For indeed, the one who remembers Allah’s favors with gratitude will find them increased, as Allah promises: "If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]." (Ibrāhīm 14:7).
