Translation Transliteration — Al-Baqarah

وَاتَّقُوا يَوْمًا لَّا تَجْزِي نَفْسٌ عَن نَّفْسٍ شَيْئًا وَلَا يُقْبَلُ مِنْهَا عَدْلٌ وَلَا تَنفَعُهَا شَفَاعَةٌ وَلَا هُمْ يُنصَرُونَ ۝١٢٣

Wattaqoo yawmal laa tajzee nafsun `an nafsin shai `anw wa laa yuqbalu minhaa `adlunw wa laa tanfa`uhaa shafaa `atunw wa laa hum yunsaroon

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

Taqwa (وَاتَّقُوا): To shield oneself from Allah's punishment by following His commands and avoiding His prohibitions.
Tajzi (تَجْزِي): To suffice, compensate, or bear the burden on behalf of another.
'Adl (عَدْل): A ransom or a compensation offered to save oneself from punishment.
Shafa'ah (شَفَاعَة): Intercession or mediation on behalf of another.
Yunsarun (يُنصَرُونَ): To be helped, supported, or rescued by external means.

Explanation of the Verse:

O believers, make piety your shield and guard yourselves against the terrors of the Day of Judgment — a Day of such absolute severity that no soul will be able to avail another soul in the least. On that Day, no ransom, no matter how great or precious, will be accepted from anyone to secure their deliverance from punishment. No intercession will benefit a person, regardless of the high rank or status of the intercessor, for intercession on that Day is only for those whom Allah permits, and no one will be granted that permission for the disbelievers. Furthermore, no external helper, ally, or supporter will exist to rescue anyone from Allah's decree. Every soul will stand alone, facing the full consequences of its deeds, with no mediator, no payment, and no escape.

This verse calls upon every soul to reflect deeply: if on that Day no one can help you, no wealth can save you, and no powerful friend can intercede for you, then the only true investment is in your relationship with Allah now — through sincere faith, righteous deeds, and turning away from sin. The doors of mercy are open in this life; the Qur'an and the Prophet's guidance are your means to safety. Do not delay, for the Day when excuses will be of no avail is nearer than you think.

121الَّذِينَ آتَيْنَاهُمُ الْكِتَابَ يَتْلُونَهُ حَقَّ تِلَاوَتِهِ أُولَٰئِكَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِ ۗ وَمَن يَكْفُرْ بِهِ فَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْخَاسِرُونَ

Those to whom We have given the Book recite it with its true recital. They [are the ones who] believe in it. And whoever disbelieves in it - it is they who are the losers.

122يَا بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ اذْكُرُوا نِعْمَتِيَ الَّتِي أَنْعَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَأَنِّي فَضَّلْتُكُمْ عَلَى الْعَالَمِينَ

O Children of Israel, remember My favor which I have bestowed upon you and that I preferred you over the worlds.

124۞ وَإِذِ ابْتَلَىٰ إِبْرَاهِيمَ رَبُّهُ بِكَلِمَاتٍ فَأَتَمَّهُنَّ ۖ قَالَ إِنِّي جَاعِلُكَ لِلنَّاسِ إِمَامًا ۖ قَالَ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِي ۖ قَالَ لَا يَنَالُ عَهْدِي الظَّالِمِينَ

And [mention, O Muhammad], when Abraham was tried by his Lord with commands and he fulfilled them. [Allah] said, "Indeed, I will make you a leader for the people." [Abraham] said, "And of my descendants?" [Allah] said, "My covenant does not include the wrongdoers."

125وَإِذْ جَعَلْنَا الْبَيْتَ مَثَابَةً لِّلنَّاسِ وَأَمْنًا وَاتَّخِذُوا مِن مَّقَامِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ مُصَلًّى ۖ وَعَهِدْنَا إِلَىٰ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَإِسْمَاعِيلَ أَن طَهِّرَا بَيْتِيَ لِلطَّائِفِينَ وَالْعَاكِفِينَ وَالرُّكَّعِ السُّجُودِ

And [mention] when We made the House a place of return for the people and [a place of] security. And take, [O believers], from the standing place of Abraham a place of prayer. And We charged Abraham and Ishmael, [saying], "Purify My House for those who perform Tawaf and those who are staying [there] for worship and those who bow and prostrate [in prayer]."
