Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
Fāqi‘ (فَاقِع): Intense, deep, and pure in color — so vivid that it stands out.
Tasurru al-nāẓirīn (تَسُرُّ النَّاظِرِينَ): Brings joy and delight to those who look at it, pleasing the eye and uplifting the heart.
Explanation of the Verse:
The people of Israel, instead of humbly obeying the command to sacrifice a cow, continued their stubborn questioning. They said to Moses (peace be upon him): "Call upon your Lord to make clear to us what its color should be." Moses replied: "He (Allah) says it is a cow of a deep, pure yellow — so radiant and beautiful that it delights everyone who beholds it."
This verse reveals the extraordinary mercy and patience of Allah, who answered their repeated questions with detailed clarity, even though they were being difficult. The description of the cow — intensely yellow and pleasing to the eye — shows that Allah’s commands are not burdensome but are filled with beauty and goodness. It also teaches us that when we ask Allah for guidance with sincerity, He responds with precision and grace.
A Call to Reflection:
Notice how the people kept asking unnecessary questions instead of simply doing what was asked. How often do we delay obedience by overthinking or finding excuses? Allah, in His infinite kindness, did not punish their questioning but answered them gently. This is an invitation for us to trust Allah’s wisdom and to obey His commands with a willing heart, for He only commands what is beneficial and beautiful for us. When we submit with sincerity, we find peace and joy — just as the yellow cow brought delight to its beholders. Let this be a reminder to embrace the beauty of Islam with an open heart, for every divine instruction is a source of blessing and light.
And [recall] when Moses said to his people, "Indeed, Allah commands you to slaughter a cow." They said, "Do you take us in ridicule?" He said, "I seek refuge in Allah from being among the ignorant."
They said, "Call upon your Lord to make clear to us what it is." [Moses] said, "[Allah] says, 'It is a cow which is neither old nor virgin, but median between that,' so do what you are commanded."
He said, "He says, 'It is a cow neither trained to plow the earth nor to irrigate the field, one free from fault with no spot upon her.' " They said, "Now you have come with the truth." So they slaughtered her, but they could hardly do it.
