📖 English Meaning
And you will surely find them the most greedy of people for life - [even] more than those who associate others with Allah. One of them wishes that he could be granted life a thousand years, but it would not remove him in the least from the [coming] punishment that he should be granted life. And Allah is Seeing of what they do.

Word Meanings:

  • أَحْرَصَ النَّاسِ (the most greedy of people for life): the most intense in desire and clinging to life.
  • يَوَدُّ (wishes): deeply desires and longs for.
  • يُعَمَّرُ (to be granted long life): to live for an extended period.
  • بِمُزَحْزِحِهِ (to remove him): to distance or save him.
(All-Seeing): fully aware of all things, nothing escapes His knowledge.

Explanation of the Verse:

O Prophet, you will surely find that the Jews are the most intense of all people in their clinging to life—even more so than the polytheists who do not believe in the Hereafter. Despite being People of the Book who claim belief in resurrection and accountability, their love for this worldly life is extreme. Each one of them wishes to live a thousand years, hoping that a lengthy existence might somehow protect them from punishment. However, no matter how long they live, their extended lifespan will not save them from Allah’s inevitable chastisement. Allah is fully aware of all their deeds, whether open or hidden, and He will recompense them justly for what they have done.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

This verse reveals a profound truth about the human heart: those who distance themselves from Allah cling desperately to this fleeting world, fearing what lies ahead. Yet, dear reader, how different is the believer’s perspective! The believer understands that this life is but a brief station on a journey to eternity. Instead of fearing death and clinging to worldly days, the believer prepares for the everlasting life to come—a life of bliss in the presence of the Most Merciful. Let this verse inspire you to examine your own heart: Are you running after a life that will end, or are you investing in a life that never ends? Allah, the All-Seeing, watches your efforts, and His justice is perfect. Turn to Him sincerely, and you will find peace that no amount of years can provide.

📜 Verse 94-98 — Al-Baqarah

Say, [O Muhammad], "If the home of the Hereafter with Allah is for you alone and not the [other] people, then wish for death, if you should be truthful.
But they will never wish for it, ever, because of what their hands have put forth. And Allah is Knowing of the wrongdoers.
And you will surely find them the most greedy of people for life - [even] more than those who associate others with Allah. One of them wishes that he could be granted life a thousand years, but it would not remove him in the least from the [coming] punishment that he should be granted life. And Allah is Seeing of what they do.
Say, "Whoever is an enemy to Gabriel - it is [none but] he who has brought the Qur'an down upon your heart, [O Muhammad], by permission of Allah, confirming that which was before it and as guidance and good tidings for the believers."
Whoever is an enemy to Allah and His angels and His messengers and Gabriel and Michael - then indeed, Allah is an enemy to the disbelievers.
