Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Qāʿan (قَاعًا): A flat, level expanse of ground, devoid of any elevation or depression.
- Ṣafṣafan (صَفْصَفًا): Smooth, even, and bare land—completely free of vegetation, plants, or any structures.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this profound verse, Allah describes the fate of the mountains on the Day of Resurrection. After they are crushed and scattered like dust, He says that He will leave the earth *"a level, smooth plain"*—utterly flat and featureless. No hills, no valleys, no buildings, no trees, no vegetation of any kind. The surface will be so perfectly even that a beholder would see neither any curve, nor any rise, nor any dip in it. It will be a barren, empty expanse, stripped of all the landmarks and features that once defined it.
This imagery serves as a powerful reminder of the transient nature of this worldly life. The mountains—those colossal, seemingly eternal structures—will be reduced to nothing in an instant by the will of their Creator. What we consider permanent and unshakeable is, in truth, fragile and entirely subject to Allah’s command. The earth that once hosted thriving civilizations, towering cities, and lush gardens will become a blank slate, awaiting the final judgment.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart. If the mightiest of Allah’s creations—the mountains—can be leveled to dust, then how can we, in our weakness, cling to the fleeting comforts of this world as if they were eternal? This scene is not meant to frighten us into despair, but to redirect our focus toward what truly matters: our relationship with our Lord, our deeds, and our preparation for the meeting with Him.
The Day when the earth becomes a smooth plain is also the Day when every soul will stand before Allah, alone with its record. There will be no mountains to hide behind, no structures to shelter us, no vegetation to offer shade. Only our faith, our sincere repentance, and our good deeds will accompany us. So, turn to Allah now, while you still have time. Seek His mercy, strive in His obedience, and let the certainty of that Day transform your choices today. For the One who has power over the mountains and the earth is the same One who hears your prayers, forgives your sins, and welcomes you with open arms when you return to Him. Do not delay—your return to Him is nearer than you think.
