Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- عِوَجًا (iwajan): Crookedness, curvature, or any deviation from straightness — such as valleys, slopes, or unevenness in the land.
- أَمْتًا (amtan): Elevation, raised ground, or any protrusion — a height or mound that breaks the flatness of the surface.
Explanation of the Verse:
On that momentous Day of Resurrection, when the mountains are crushed and scattered like dust, the earth will be left completely flat and level — smooth, with no vegetation, no valleys, no hills, and no slopes. The verse tells us that when you look upon that land, you will see no crookedness whatsoever — no bending, no winding paths, no depressions — and no elevation either — no rising mounds, no high grounds, no unevenness. It will be a perfectly plain, seamless expanse, stretched out in absolute smoothness from horizon to horizon.
This description serves a profound purpose: it reminds us of the absolute power of Allah (God) — the One who can flatten mountains to dust and reshape the entire earth in an instant. Nothing escapes His command, and no force can resist His will. The same earth that today contains towering peaks and deep valleys will become a single, level surface — a stage upon which all of humanity, from the first to the last, will stand before their Lord for judgment.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this awe-inspiring scene. The mountains you see today — those majestic, unshakable giants — will be turned to nothing, and the earth will become a smooth, open plain. This is not a distant myth; it is a certain reality that awaits every one of us. How then can we become attached to this fleeting world, with its temporary elevations and depressions, when we know that all of it will be levelled? Let this verse awaken your heart to prepare for that Day — the Day when only your deeds will matter, and when the mercy of your Lord will be your only refuge. Turn to Allah now, seek His forgiveness, and strive to walk the straight path — for on that Day, the earth will be flat, but your standing before Allah will depend on how you lived today.
