Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Mahdan (مَهْدًا): A cradle or bed — meaning the earth has been made smooth, firm, and suitable for living, just as a cradle is prepared for an infant.
  • Salaka (سَلَكَ): To make a way or path — He inserted and opened up roads and routes.
  • Subulan (سُبُلًا): Plural of *sabil* — paths, highways, or routes.
  • Azwajan (أَزْوَاجًا): Pairs, kinds, or varieties — here referring to different species and types.
  • Shatta (شَتَّىٰ): Diverse, varied, and different — in form, color, taste, and benefit.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse continues the speech of Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) to Pharaoh, reminding him of the countless blessings of Allah — blessings that Pharaoh himself enjoyed but denied. Musa points to the One who created and prepared everything for humanity.

First, Allah made the earth a cradle for you — not a rough, unyielding surface, but a place that is spread out, stable, and comfortable. Just as a mother prepares a soft bed for her child, Allah prepared the earth for you to live upon, to build, to farm, and to rest.

Second, He opened up for you paths within it — roads and routes through mountains, valleys, and deserts, so that you may travel from one land to another for trade, for knowledge, for visiting, and for all your needs. These paths are not random; they are divinely facilitated, making your journeys possible and safe.

Third, He sent down water from the sky — rain that falls at the right times and in the right amounts. And then — notice the shift in the verse — Allah says: *"Then We brought forth with it pairs of plants, diverse."* The One who sends the rain is the One who causes the growth. From that single water, He brings out countless varieties of plants: different colors, different shapes, different tastes, different scents, and different benefits. Some are for food, some for medicine, some for shade, some for beauty. All of this from one water — a clear sign of the Creator's infinite power and wisdom.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this verse. The earth beneath your feet — how firm and stable it is! The roads you travel — how easily they take you to your destinations! The rain that falls — how it transforms dry land into gardens of green! Every time you eat a fruit, every time you walk a path, every time you rest on this earth — you are witnessing the mercy of your Lord.

These are not just natural phenomena; they are signs from Allah, calling you to know Him, to love Him, and to thank Him. The One who prepared all of this for you — did He create you for no purpose? Did He give you all these blessings so that you would forget Him and worship others? Certainly not!

So turn to your Creator with a grateful heart. Let these blessings lead you to faith. Let this earth, these paths, and this rain remind you of the One who made them all — and who, by His mercy, has prepared something even greater for those who believe and do good: a Paradise as vast as the heavens and the earth. Will you not answer His call?
