Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • ʿIlmuhā – Knowledge of it (the fate and deeds of the past nations).
  • Kitāb – A Book; here, the Preserved Tablet (al-Lawḥ al-Maḥfūẓ).
  • Lā yaḍill – Does not go astray; does not err or make a mistake.
  • Lā yansā – Does not forget.

Tafsir (Explanation):

When Pharaoh questioned Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) about the fate of the earlier generations—those who had rejected their messengers—Musa responded with a profound and reassuring answer. He said: "Their knowledge is with my Lord in a Book." This means that the full account of what those nations did, and what was done to them, is recorded precisely with Allah in the Preserved Tablet. Musa did not claim to know every detail himself; rather, he affirmed that Allah’s knowledge encompasses all things, and nothing is hidden from Him.

Musa then added two magnificent attributes of Allah: "My Lord does not go astray, nor does He forget." This means that Allah never errs in His judgment, nor does He overlook or forget anything. He is perfect in knowledge and perfect in action. Every deed—whether of the tyrants or the righteous—is accounted for, and every soul will be recompensed with absolute justice.

This verse carries a powerful lesson for us: when we are faced with questions about the unseen or the wisdom behind events, we should anchor our hearts in the certainty that Allah’s knowledge is complete and His justice is flawless. Nothing escapes Him, and no wrong will go unpunished, just as no good will be unrewarded. This is a source of immense comfort for the believer—knowing that the Lord of the heavens and the earth is fully aware of every situation, and His plan is always perfect. So, place your trust in Him, for He neither errs nor forgets, and His promise is true.
