Word Meanings:
- هَذَانِ – "These two" – referring to Musa (Moses) and Harun (Aaron), peace be upon them.
- لَسَاحِرَانِ – "Are certainly magicians" – the emphatic form confirms their claim.
- يُخْرِجَاكُم مِّنْ أَرْضِكُم – "To drive you out of your land" – i.e., from Egypt.
- بِطَرِيقَتِكُمُ الْمُثْلَى – "Your exemplary way" – meaning their superior religion, way of life, or their prestigious status and leadership in society.
Explanation of the Verse:
When the magicians of Pharaoh gathered for the great confrontation, they whispered secretly among themselves, consulting one another about how to face Musa and Harun. Their private counsel revealed their deep concern and plotting, as they said: "Indeed, these two are certainly magicians." They sought to convince themselves and the people that what Musa brought was not the truth of Allah, but merely sorcery like their own—yet they knew in their hearts that his signs were extraordinary.
They then revealed their true fear: "They intend to drive you out of your land with their magic." This was a calculated psychological tactic—they played on the people's attachment to their homeland, Egypt, warning that Musa and Harun aimed to expel them from their homes and seize power. This was an attempt to turn the masses against the two prophets by stirring fear and loyalty to Pharaoh's regime.
"And they want to take away your exemplary way" – meaning they sought to eliminate their established religion, their revered traditions, and their superior status in society. The magicians understood that if Musa's message prevailed, their own privileged position—their prestige, income, and influence—would collapse. Their "exemplary way" was the system of idolatry and Pharaoh's tyranny that kept them in authority.
The verse captures the essence of how the forces of falsehood react when truth arrives: they label it as magic or deception, they instill fear of losing worldly possessions and homeland, and they defend their corrupt systems out of self-interest. Yet, as the story unfolds, Allah demonstrates that His truth prevails over all falsehood, no matter how elaborate the schemes of His opponents.
A Call to Reflection:
This scene from the life of Musa teaches us a timeless lesson: when the truth of Allah is presented, the opponents will always find excuses—calling it "magic," warning of "loss," or defending their "traditions." But the believer must remain steadfast, knowing that Allah's support is with those who uphold His cause. The magicians, despite their initial arrogance, eventually recognized the truth and fell in prostration, declaring their faith in the Lord of Musa and Harun. This shows that even the most hardened hearts can be softened when the truth is clear—so never despair of Allah's guidance reaching those around you. And remember, the victory of truth over falsehood is not just a historical event; it is a promise from Allah that will always come to pass for those who sincerely strive in His path.
