Tafsir (Explanation):
The magicians of Pharaoh, after witnessing the miraculous staff of Moses turn into a serpent and swallow their illusions, fell into prostration and declared their faith in the Lord of Moses and Aaron. In this verse, they address Pharaoh directly, saying: "Indeed, we have believed in our Lord so that He may forgive us our sins—both those we committed in our past ignorance and disbelief, and the sin of the sorcery which you forced us to learn and perform in order to oppose Moses. We did not do it willingly; you compelled us, and we seek Allah’s pardon for that."
Then they affirm a profound truth that strikes at the heart of Pharaoh’s tyranny: "And Allah is better and more enduring." Meaning: Allah’s reward for those who obey Him is far superior to any worldly reward you, O Pharaoh, could offer us—whether wealth, status, or power. And His punishment for those who disobey Him is far more lasting and severe than any punishment you threaten us with. So we choose Allah over you, and we accept whatever you may do to us—even death—because what awaits us with our Lord is eternal bliss, while your threats are temporary and insignificant.
This declaration shows the depth of their transformation: from servants of Pharaoh to servants of Allah, from practitioners of magic to believers in the truth, and from fear of a tyrant to hope in the Merciful. They realized that true success lies not in pleasing a mortal king, but in pleasing the King of all kings, whose reward never fades and whose punishment never ends.
Da‘wah Reflection:
This verse is a timeless lesson in courage and sincerity. These magicians had everything to lose—their positions, their wealth, their lives—yet they gave it all up for the sake of Allah the moment the truth became clear to them. They teach us that no matter how deep we are in sin, sincere repentance and faith can erase it all. Allah’s mercy is vast enough to forgive even those who practiced sorcery, as long as they turn to Him with true hearts. And they remind us that the pleasures and threats of this world are fleeting, while Allah’s reward and punishment are eternal. So let us be like them: when truth is clear, hold onto it firmly, and never let the fear of people stop us from pleasing the One who created us. For Allah is indeed better in reward and more enduring in consequence—so choose Him, and you will never lose.
