Surah Al-Anbiya — Verse 111

They asked: "When will this threat of punishment come to pass, if you are truly a messenger of Allah?"

The Prophet (peace be upon him) is commanded to make it clear that he has no knowledge of the exact timing of such matters—this belongs solely to Allah, the Knower of the unseen. But more importantly, he points out a profound truth: perhaps the delay in punishment is not a sign of Allah's neglect or approval of their deeds. Rather, it could be a trial—a deliberate test to see how they will use this extra time. Will they reflect, repent, and return to their Lord? Or will they persist in disbelief and wickedness, thereby increasing their own accountability?

This delay is also described as "enjoyment for a time"—a temporary provision that allows them to taste the pleasures of this worldly life. But this enjoyment is not a reward; it is a rope of respite that, if they continue in their transgression, will only tighten into a more severe reckoning. As the scholars have noted, this is an istidrāj—a gradual leading astray, where Allah grants respite so that the sinner increases in sin, and thus the punishment becomes even more fitting and just.

The verse carries a powerful lesson for all of humanity: the apparent success, wealth, and comfort of those who oppose the truth should never deceive us. The worldly life is but a fleeting moment, and its pleasures are a test, not a guarantee of divine favor. What may seem like a delay is, in fact, an opportunity—an open door for repentance before the final hour arrives.

Repent before the appointed time arrives, for when death comes, no delay will be granted. The Prophet (peace be upon him) did not know when the punishment would fall, and neither do we know when our own time will end.
