Surah Al-Anbiya — Verse 53

• ʿĀbidīn (عَابِدِينَ): Worshippers / devotees.

Explanation of the Verse:

When Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham, peace be upon him) questioned his people about the statues they were worshipping, asking, "What are these images to which you are devoted?" — they did not respond with any rational argument or evidence. Instead, they replied: "We found our forefathers worshipping them." In other words, they admitted that they had no proof or logical basis for their worship; their only justification was blind imitation of their ancestors. They said: "Our fathers worshipped these idols, and we simply follow in their footsteps, emulating their practice without questioning it."

This response reveals the weakness of their position — they relied solely on inherited tradition, not on truth or guidance. Their answer was a confession that they had no knowledge or certainty, only blind conformity to the ways of their predecessors. This is the state of those who follow falsehood: they cling to the customs of their ancestors even when those customs contradict reason, revelation, and the natural disposition (fitrah) that God instilled in every human being.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a profound lesson for every seeker of truth. How often do we find ourselves following the ways of our families, communities, or societies without ever asking: *Is this what God wants? Is this supported by revelation and sound reasoning?* The people of Ibrahim were not evil by nature — they were simply trapped in the habit of blind imitation. They never paused to reflect on whether their ancestors were right or wrong.

Islam calls upon you to think, to question, and to seek the truth with an open heart. God honored the human being with intellect, and He sent prophets and scriptures to guide that intellect toward what is true and beneficial. Do not let the phrase "we found our forefathers doing this" become a barrier between you and the truth. Instead, follow the example of Ibrahim — he broke away from the corrupt traditions of his people and sought his Lord with sincerity, and God guided him to the straight path.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) came with the same message: worship God alone, free yourself from false traditions, and submit to the One who created you and sustains you. This is the path of true success — a path that leads to peace in this life and eternal bliss in the Hereafter. So be among those who use their intellect to recognize the truth, and let your worship be based on knowledge and certainty, not on blind imitation.
