Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • ضَلَالٍ (Dalal): Deviation from the truth, error, or straying from the correct path.
  • مُبِينٍ (Mubeen): Clear, evident, and unmistakable.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) addressed his people with remarkable clarity and courage after they had questioned him about the idols he had broken. He said to them: "Indeed, you and your forefathers have been in clear, manifest error."

This statement was both a decisive refutation and a profound wake-up call. Ibrahim was not merely criticizing their present actions—he was also challenging the blind following of ancestral traditions. His words struck at the very foundation of their society, which had built its religious identity on the customs of previous generations. He made it clear that truth is not determined by how many people follow a belief, nor by how ancient that belief is, but by whether it aligns with the worship of the One True God.

The phrase "you and your forefathers" is significant because it addresses both the leaders and the followers, both the present generation and those who came before. Ibrahim was essentially saying: "Your lineage of worship is built upon a foundation of falsehood, and falsehood does not become truth simply because it has been practiced for generations."

This verse carries a timeless lesson for all of humanity: we must be willing to examine our beliefs and practices critically, even those inherited from our families and societies. True guidance comes from sincere reflection and submission to Allah alone, not from blind adherence to tradition. Ibrahim's boldness in declaring this truth—while standing among a hostile people—demonstrates the courage that faith instills in a believer. He did not soften the truth or compromise his message, even when facing those who had power over him.

For us today, this verse invites us to reflect: Are we following the truth because we have understood it, or are we merely following the ways of our ancestors without question? The Qur'an calls us to use our intellect, to seek knowledge, and to worship Allah with sincerity and understanding. Ibrahim's declaration reminds us that the path of truth may sometimes be lonely, but it is the only path that leads to true success in this life and the Hereafter.
